ENG | 11 rock-hewn churches were dug in Lalibela, in accordance with a precise topography. Indeed, the goal was to recreate an Ethiopian version of Jerusalem, at an era when pilgrimages to the Holy Land were compromised by the expansion of Islam in Northern Africa.
