Work is a strange thing when you carry a camera. It is a privilege to be paid for your hobby, especially when the assignment feels like a debt to the future.

In 2008, I was in Yerevan shooting for Pernod Ricard. That was the first time I met Djivan Gasparyan. I had lived with his music long before the first click of the shutter. Djivan was the great master of the duduk, an ancient flute carved from apricot wood - a double-reed instrument that has existed for over fifteen hundred years. During a masterclass, he handed me a duduk and showed me how to play.

We met again in 2012. I was photographing him for Esquire. By then, his music had already found its way into Hollywood films - the sound was known to many, but the man remained unchanged. He carried himself with quiet dignity and a kind of rare, almost otherworldly kindness that made you feel calm just being near him. When he lifted the instrument to his lips, the room fell still. Hearts would tighten, people would cry, and it felt as if even birds and animals might pause to listen. The duduk has a warm, breathy tone that feels closer to a melancholic human voice than to wood.
