We have recently been sharing tips about succesfull ICM images, here is the last one for now, tip number 18:
How your imagination starts to work; this image is about a bird taking off to fly into better future. Away from the darkness we are in. It may be a crane it may be a swan. Nevertheless, it is ready to open its wings and take off to the unknown. Yes. And no. this is the M25 ring highway around Heathrow airport in London. How about that for getting your imagination to work.

We have recently been sharing tips about succesfull ICM images, here is tip number 17:
Essence of the subject, the soul of the subject; here we don’t show the viewer what a Dalmatian pelican exactly looks like. We want the viewer to feel what the pelican feels like, how does he behave, what does he thinks and how the messy hair is part of his identity.

The light creates a special mood. The red light could speak about danger or romance. The big sweeping movement emphasizes both factors.

Tip 14: Is there a sense of story?
The swans are migrating south. There is a strong emotional connection to them through this image even though they are almost abstract. My mind fulfills the story. The drama is emphasized by light contrast, the white birds against the dark forest.

Tips about succesfull images:
Tip 13:
Is the image is inviting: this image has a lot of stories which everyone can see differently. The invitation to view this image and create the rest of the story is made by the peculiar way the rapids are flowing behind but also in front of the tree. Single exposure by the way.

Tip 12:
Are you hooked to the image: this has two hooks, the graphic black and white elements themselves and the gull flying almost sharp against the background between the branches. It makes you stop scrolling and study more and invent the story.

More tips on successful images:
Tip 11:
Movement of my eye around the image: It is important that the image is interesting enough to make the eye go around and study further. But the movement must not escape outside or you lose the viewer.

Here the eye makes big circles around the person but always is pulled back to the lower left corner due to the light. As the eye goes up the dark top right corner keeps it inside the image.
