Why should you have couple photos? Even if you're already going to take wedding photos anyway. Isn’t it the same thing?

Here are a few reasons why you should do it:

A couple photo shoot don't have to be tied to a wedding or engagement - although the photos work well for save the date purposes, for example.

Having a couple photo shoot doesn't really need a bigger reason or explanation. Reason enough is that you want to spend time together, to give time to each other and your relationship.

Unlike on a wedding day the photography is not tied to time and place. We can tailor the shoot to include things that are important to you, it can involve a hobby or interest of yours, or it can be done in a location that is important to you.

When on a wedding day your thought may be a lot in the wedding and you may feel nervous just because of that, but in a couple’s shoot there is no need to be anywhere else, not physically nor in your thoughts. Just there together in the moment.

All in all it’s more relaxed with casual clothes that let you to be yourself and do things that your wedding dress maybe wouldn’t allow you to.

In an ideal setting the location works as part of the story, not just as a background for the wedding photos.

How do you know who is the right match for you?

Ask yourself these questions:
What is important to us on our wedding day?
What purpose do we want our wedding photos to fulfill?

The right photographer is the one who takes photographs that are not only beautiful but also convey the things that are important to you even years from now.

The first thing that helps you to start cutting down on options is the style of the photographer. Do you prefer softness or sharp edges, dark and moody or light and airy, bright colours or muted ones? Does a more artistic approach appeal to you or a more realistic one? In your portraits do you prefer a wide angle with a beautiful landscape on the background? Do you want the photos to showcase your style and attire on your wedding day? Or do you want the photos to be intimate and emotional - is the love between the two of you and capturing the emotions the most important? How about the documentary side, can you really sense the atmosphere of the wedding almost as if you had been present when going through the photographer’s galleries? Or is it most important to you that there is a picture of every guest no matter what?

It doesn’t even have to be either or - the style of a photographer can be a mix of many things but you hardly get all of that in one photographer. Important disclaimer: don’t expect to get something you have not seen on the photographer’s portfolio. Most photographers are willing to fulfill your wishes and go beyond your expectations, but a photographer's style is fundamentally individual and you can't make one photographer into another.

When you find a photographer whose work you are drawn into, get more familiar with their work, wedding galleries, the mission and the way of working. Follow their feed and stories in social media, get familiar with their website, and when you find what you have been looking for, get in touch and ask for a get-to-know phone call to ultimately see if you click. The photographer has to feel right as a person. During the call you also have a possibility to ask them questions about the things that are important to you.

Taking pictures has been an integral part of my experience since I was a child. However, I have been trying to remind myself lately that photography should always be intentional, not just reflexive automation. I strive to live in the moment and see things with my own eyes, not through the screen of my mobile phone, so that the experience primarily sticks to my own memory, not the camera’s. Both living in the moment and photography are possible when you make sure that the photography does not steal all the attention but rather passes along as an unnoticed part of the experience.

I am glad that the moments of my childhood are captured in photographs and neatly organized in an album for easy viewing. In the era of film cameras, the number of photos was under control. I am also glad that I have photographed my life. The meaning of photographs does not become apparent the next day, week, month or even a few years later. The meaning of photographs truly becomes apparent when those memories have faded and disappeared from your mind. Photographs allow you to bring them back. They also help preserve memories so that they never disappear.

Give me passion, give me raw unbridled emotions. Give me goofy jokes and tickles, give me enthusiastic joy, give me quiet moments spent together. All that matters is that it’s you.

The best thing about weddings is that they can be anything. At its best, a wedding can be an unforgettable experience for guests as well. When planning a wedding, it’s not necessarily the best idea to think about how your friend did their wedding last year, but to think outside the box. What is it that You want? Even the craziest ideas are allowed.

While you shouldn’t think about what others want or what they might expect to get, but rather what feels right to you, it is important to think about how to make the day such that your guests are as fully involved as you are.

While your wedding should follow your vision, it is also a shared experience with your guests. If your guests are not part of your plans, it can feel like something is missing. No matter how perfect your vision is, if your guests don’t understand it or know how to carry it out together with you, the vision looses its point.

Ultimately, it is the guests who create the final atmosphere of the wedding. So it is important to find a balance between your own preferences and those of your guests.

This is me. Part ⅔

Photos have always been important to me. The camera has been a big part of my life since I was a baby in the 80s, when my father took pictures of our family memories. I got my first camera as a gift for my 8th birthday. It was a fully automatic film camera. I still have it. We were on holiday in Denmark, so I took my first pictures there.

Since then the camera has been with me everywhere. On every camp, field trip and vacation, at birthdays and events. Nowadays, it is mostly with me in nature, on trips and abroad. In those biggest moments in life. With a mobile phone, of course, the phone camera is always with me but I don’t like it. I don’t like the fact that my phone’s photo gallery is full of useless photos that I never needed to take - ten photos of the same thing just because it’s possible. Photos that I even struggle to go through. Lately, I’ve been thinking about replacing the phone with my birthday camera.

Above all, I strive to document my life for myself and as a keepsake. Not for others to see on social media. Photos taken for my company’s social media are, of course, a different matter. They are always taken intentionally with a specific purpose and goal in mind. But when you take pictures for yourself, I think it is part of the experience and living in the moment. If you document moments for someone else’s eyes, it becomes more goal-directed, and taking the photo or video becomes more important than the moment itself.

Ps. This is my favourite childhood song.
