The best thing about weddings is that they can be anything. At its best, a wedding can be an unforgettable experience for guests as well. When planning a wedding, it’s not necessarily the best idea to think about how your friend did their wedding last year, but to think outside the box. What is it that You want? Even the craziest ideas are allowed.

While you shouldn’t think about what others want or what they might expect to get, but rather what feels right to you, it is important to think about how to make the day such that your guests are as fully involved as you are.

While your wedding should follow your vision, it is also a shared experience with your guests. If your guests are not part of your plans, it can feel like something is missing. No matter how perfect your vision is, if your guests don’t understand it or know how to carry it out together with you, the vision looses its point.

Ultimately, it is the guests who create the final atmosphere of the wedding. So it is important to find a balance between your own preferences and those of your guests.

This is me. Part ⅔

Photos have always been important to me. The camera has been a big part of my life since I was a baby in the 80s, when my father took pictures of our family memories. I got my first camera as a gift for my 8th birthday. It was a fully automatic film camera. I still have it. We were on holiday in Denmark, so I took my first pictures there.

Since then the camera has been with me everywhere. On every camp, field trip and vacation, at birthdays and events. Nowadays, it is mostly with me in nature, on trips and abroad. In those biggest moments in life. With a mobile phone, of course, the phone camera is always with me but I don’t like it. I don’t like the fact that my phone’s photo gallery is full of useless photos that I never needed to take - ten photos of the same thing just because it’s possible. Photos that I even struggle to go through. Lately, I’ve been thinking about replacing the phone with my birthday camera.

Above all, I strive to document my life for myself and as a keepsake. Not for others to see on social media. Photos taken for my company’s social media are, of course, a different matter. They are always taken intentionally with a specific purpose and goal in mind. But when you take pictures for yourself, I think it is part of the experience and living in the moment. If you document moments for someone else’s eyes, it becomes more goal-directed, and taking the photo or video becomes more important than the moment itself.

Ps. This is my favourite childhood song.

Why do I photograph love?

Because love is the most beautiful thing on Earth
and all beautiful things should be seen and treasured.
In the world we live in right now, we need to see more beauty and happiness. Things that bring us joy and good feeling.

Because photographs are a key to our memories. In times when everything may feel pointless or we struggle to remember what we have and things that once brought us joy, or simply because we want to relive those moments, we can open that chest of treasures filled with memories and love letters we once wrote to life and to those whom we love.

If we photograph our memories on our travels or in everyday life, is it art or documentation of memories?

Art is subjective. The definition of art is controversial. Simply put, there are two criteria for defining art:

Is it done intentionally?

Does it speak to people?

Art can be unintentional and still speak to people. Art can also be art for its creator, even if it does not speak to people. In that case, it is art, but maybe just not very good art. Art can also be intentional and good in cases where the creator never shares it. Sometimes it is discovered later and it is recognized as art.

Defining a photograph as art does not necessarily have to happen at the moment the picture is taken. Art can also be an image that was created by accident, for example as a result of a random shot. What is important is that the photographer sees something in the picture that speaks to them. In that case, the object of creating art is not the thing being photographed, but the image itself.

Simply put, I could answer the original question like this:

A photo that speaks to strangers and invites thought beyond what is in the photo becomes art.

When we create photos for those who lived it, it’s called memories.

So the same photograph can be either or both at the same time.

When I travel and take photographs, I take them with the intention of creating memories and beautiful images for myself of the places I visited and the moments I experienced, but I can rarely call it art. Rarely do I have time on my travels to create art with an intention. If creating art becomes more important than the experience itself, it becomes the center of everything, and the experience itself suffers. But I still can’t know whether the images will speak to outsiders or not. I can always hope that’s the case, but I understand that the thought is ambitious.

Hi there! This is me. Part ⅓

I have been photographing weddings for over ten years. Phew! That’s a long time! I usually get bored with things faster or life just has other plans.

I have always been fascinated by love and love stories since I was a child. My favorite childhood movie, when I was around 12 years old, was Gone with the Wind. I wanted to be Scarlett with her green eyes, corsets and temperament. I remember sewing myself a skirt in school craft class. The elastic was so tight it hurt my waist. That’s how corsets are made, right?

As a teenager, I devoured all the works of Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. Notting Hill, Titanic, Piano, Legends of the Fall, Before Sunrise, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, Horse Whisperer - you name it - were all part of my VHS collection. I had probably seen every romantic movie made in the 90s.

Love is powerful. It is fascinating and beautiful. Scary, crazy and irrational even. There’s a reason why so many stories are written about it. I think that is exactly why I am also interested in photographing love.

My mindset is that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Except when it comes to my values – nature, animal rights, and human rights, which I try to defend as best I can. Surprisingly, I am not perfect either - none of us is.

Turning 40 has been soothing. I finally know who I am and what is important in life. And especially what is not. It’s wonderful to realize that you no longer care what other people think, as long as you know what those things mean to you. We only have this life and we should enjoy it. We should live our life for ourselves, not to please expectations.

This is the wedding story that gained me the second place in the ”Suomen parhaat hääkuvat” wedding photography competition, but more importantly, a story that gives the couple lifelong access to a treasure chest where their memories are preserved.

The first photo has a carousel. However, the meaning of this photo is totally different for me as the person who took the picture and was part of the experience than it is for you. For me it conveys the good feeling I had on that trip and it opens a window not only to what is in the picture but also to the world and story that unfolds beyond it.

When I see this photo I remember how I spent a leisurely, sunny October day in Montmartre photographing this carousel over and over again, waiting for just the right shot. I had come to Paris to relax, to just lazily wander around the city, occasionally sitting on a cafe terrace or a park bench to people-watch. It’s also one of my favorite things to do.

For you this photo represents something else. Maybe it brings back a memory related to a carousel or childhood. Maybe it creates a good feeling of a life where things don’t have to be taken so seriously. It’s also possible that the image doesn’t speak to you at all. What you see in this image, or do you see anything?

In the wedding photography competition Hääkuvaajien hääkuvat, I achieved second and third place in the Best Story category. Each entry consisted of 15 images that captured the narrative of a wedding day.

I love that this competition included a storytelling category. Wedding photography is about more than just a single, perfect image—it’s about weaving together a series of photos that convey the emotions, moments, and essence of the day. While one standout image might end up framed on the living room wall, the true story of a wedding day unfolds through a collection of images that complement each other. These images bring back the emotions and memories every time you revisit them.

This was the first year the competition was organized by , featuring seven different categories plus an open series. The jury, made up of 10 esteemed photographers from across Europe, judged the photos purely on artistic merit, without knowing the photographers behind them. In the Best Story category, every image mattered, but it was the overall narrative that made the difference.

In this post, you’ll find the 15 images that formed the story earning second place. I can’t wait for the wedding season to begin so I can create more of these unforgettable memories!

A huge thank you to , , and for organizing this competition, to the judges for their dedication in reviewing hundreds of entries, and to the sponsors for making it all possible! via .app
