Rock pipit - Pipit maritime

It was already the end of the first chick rearing of the season for these pipits! Some fledglings were already wandering about on the islands of the Hoat archipelago, parents fetching moth for them all day long.

The final migration stretch for the European honey buzzards (Bondrée apivore). Most of them have already arrived on their breeding grounds now. This is one was circling with its probable mate so likely to breed nearby now!

Lovely Mediterranean gulls (mouette mélanocéphale) in nuptial plumage on Noirmoutier Island! They are nesting at this time of the year, as you can guess in the background.

Lovely songs coming out of the woods these days. Shorter than cirl bunting and lesser whitethroat, their quiet song can be missed quite easily.

It's a Mediterranean species which has a very similar cousin species in eastern Europe (Easter Bonelli's warbler). Look for a white belly and eyebrow and greenish wings contrasting with the brownish back. But only their voice distinguishes the two species.

It was also fishing time at the tern colony! Pairs are taking turns (;)) at the nest not to lose the spot. But they have to feed still, while they are waiting for the first egg.

Very fortunate to have join a friend at work, monitoring gulls and cormorants reproduction on the Hoat Hoedic archipelago in Western France!

This is was the occasion to take my first decent pictures of a European s**g (cormorants huppé) as well as witnessing their ecology during their breeding time!

The big one of the year so far for me: the elegant tern (Sterne élégante)! This individual has been returning to a sandwich tern colony in Noirmoutier island for twenty years but this is the first time I was able to visit the place 😍

Notice the thin orange bill getting paller at the tip, legs are also black and the head crest can be widely erected when on the ground! This bird has color rings and is known to have bred with another elegant tern there as well as with many sandwich terns, resulting in the birth of some hybrids, with some black on their beaks.
