Evening engagement sessions tend to work well because there is nothing to rush toward.

Emma, Nick and I walked, chatted, stopped when it feels right, and let things unfold at their own pace.

It never needs to feel like a photoshoot to come away with photographs that feel like you.

Documentary photography is often misunderstood as standing back and hoping for the best.

In reality, most of the work happens before anything feels like it is slipping away on a wedding day.

Quiet guidance, small adjustments, and knowing when to step in or stay out of the way are what keep the day feeling calm rather than chaotic.

After the day has passed, couples often talk about how fast it all felt.

Certain moments come and go before you really have time to take them in, simply because there is so much happening around you.

I spend a lot of time watching what unfolds beyond the obvious moments, so those quieter parts of the day don’t disappear unnoticed.

Not everything from a wedding needs to be perfect to be worth keeping.

This was taken on an Instax at the end of the day, just after golden hour and just before the heat of the dance floor.

I see this a lot at weddings in France. The moments people come back to aren’t always the polished ones. They’re the ones that feel held onto, even if just briefly.

Ceremony photographs aren’t just about what’s happening at the front.

I’m as interested in what’s happening in the space around the couple and the people in it.

I’m watching the space as much as the couple.

A morning proposal in Bordeaux.

This one was a treat. Emma and Nick arrived at the airport the day before with Emma having no idea where they were flying or what was planned for the next morning. Quite a way to start a trip.

Nick had everything mapped out—the spot, the timing, even the exact angle he’d kneel at—until we turned up to rain and a team of workmen right where he needed to be. A few frantic messages later and we were improvising. Luckily, by the time they reached Jardin Public the skies had cleared and the workmen had vanished for what must’ve been their fifth coffee of the morning. Perfect timing for once.

Proposals are always a buzz to photograph. There’s a mix of nerves, adrenaline and pure joy that you don’t really find anywhere else. Emma and Nick were warm, funny and completely in the moment. Nick thought she might have suspected something, but she hadn’t clocked it at all—although a few things suddenly made sense afterwards, apparently.

A lovely morning, and a very good way to start the day in Bordeaux.

Ellie and Chris’s wedding is going to stay with me for a long time. I got a message less than 24 hours before asking if I could shoot it, and it ended up being 42 degrees in the Dordogne, but the whole day was wonderful because of the people involved. I’ve shot at Château du Raysse before and it’s always a brilliant place to photograph — so many corners and pockets of light that add something to the day, even in that kind of heat.

These five frames sum it up for me: the quiet moments before anything big happens, the energy of the bridal party, the nerves in the doorway, the walk back up the aisle, and the sunset at the end.

I’ve added a bit of gear geekery at the end with the settings and equipment I used. I’ve switched things up since then — including adding a beast of a lens to the line-up — more on that later.

I’ve been going back through Christian and Leonnie’s wedding this week, and these five frames are the ones I kept coming back to. They’re not the big set-piece moments you’d expect, but the smaller things happening around the edges that gave the day its character. There’s the walk to the ceremony, the dad trying his best not to crumble during his son’s speech, the sudden burst of energy when the napkins started flying at dinner, the huge hug after one of the best best-man speeches I’ve heard in a long time, and that first quiet moment the couple had alone after the ceremony once the noise had finally settled.

These kinds of moments are the ones I’m always looking out for because they tend to reveal more about a wedding than anything planned or posed. When people stop thinking about the camera and just settle into whatever is happening around them, you start to see the real shape of the day — the relationships between people, the emotion, and the bits of humour and warmth that would disappear if you tried to stage them. When I’m putting a gallery together, these are the moments that make it feel like you’re stepping back into the day rather than just looking at a set of photographs.

If you’re planning a wedding in France and want photographs that feel like the day you actually lived, I’d be happy to hear what you’re planning.

Christian and Leonnie’s wedding in the Dordogne.

A little light behind what I’m thinking when I take images. It was a wedding, so of course it was wonderful, but it was also bloody hot — around 42°C. How my cameras got through the day without overheating I’ll never know, but I’m glad they did.

And not one mention of timeless photographs (apart from this one), continuing my fight back against clichéd wedding fluff. Slap me if you ever see me using words like that.

I photograph weddings by watching how light and people move through a space.
It’s less about directing and more about knowing when to step in and when to hold back.

The good photographs usually come from instinct — noticing the rhythm of the day and reacting at the right moment.
You can’t plan it, you just have to stay aware and ready.
