Rocky k**b #20/138 ⛰️

Rocky K**b took us to the other side of the Tararuas, exploring the south east corner this time. We spent the night at Waohine Campsite, then got up early, crossed a massive suspension bridge, and headed up the track through some seriously beautiful bush.

The Mt Reeves track wasn’t sign posted so we weren’t originally sure if there was even going to be much of a track, but it turned out to be awesome and pretty untouched, with heaps of kidney fern everywhere.

Six or seven hundred metres of climbing later, we made it to the top of Rocky K**b, ticking off k**b number 20. Feels good to be well into double digits now 😄

That’s all from the Tararuas for now, but there are still plenty of k**bs left to summit, so we’ll definitely be back!

Reminiscing about our trip across the Alps last year 🇫🇷🇦🇹🇨🇭🇮🇹

It was one of those trips I’d dreamed about for a long time, and now I can’t quite believe it was almost a year ago. The mountains in Europe couldn’t have felt more different from the ones we have here in New Zealand, both stunning in their own way, but there was something so grand and ancient about the Alps.

In New Zealand, I often feel like a wee explorer, heading into places that feel like you have them all to yourself. In Europe, the mountains felt like they carried history, like I was one of thousands who had wandered through these places before us. It felt powerful in a completely different way.

New Zealand’s history feels so young when compared to everything these Alps have witnessed, and we felt incredibly lucky to experience even a small part of that history on our trip.

Baxter K**b #19/138 🌿

Normally these missions have us deep in the backcountry, hiking through big mountains, but after six days in the Tararuas we found ourselves back in Wellington chasing one of the city k**bs instead. We typed “Baxter’s K**b” straight into Google Maps, drove to the car park, followed the sign pointing the way, and before long we were standing at the trig beside a cell tower overlooking Porirua.

A pretty random summit, but a cool reminder that this mission is about exploring all corners of New Zealand, the wild places and everything in between. If there’s a k**b, we’re gonna summit it. Even if it’s sitting above the capital city!

Tirotiro K**b #18/138 ✨⛰️

Day 6 and the final day of our Tararua mission. What an epic trip through some of the country’s most talked-about rugged, wild and adventurous terrain. Exactly what the K**b Mission is all about, getting to new places and experiencing the best of it.

After a final night at Kime hut with a stunning sunset, we made our way down the ridge, passed the beautiful historic Field Hut, and half an hour later found ourselves standing on Tirotiro K**b.

A quiet little bushy spot that most people probably walk straight past without ever knowing they’re on a k**b… but not us 😎

K**b 18 officially ticked off the list ✔️🍻

I feel like I never really fully adjust to daylight savings ending… and especially while camping. As soon as the sun sets, it’s time to warm up with a hot chocolate and make dinner. Then before you know it your getting into bed at 7:30pm 😅

Is it just me?! Either way the hot chocolate part is essential, so my Flash 1.0L must come everywhere with me from now on 🫡

Thanks for keeping me warm from the inside 🫶🏻

Boyd-Wilson K**b #17/138 ⛰️

The infamous Tararua ladder delivered the full experience 🌬️ clagged in, windy, steep, and just a little bit wild. Such a crazy piece of track and I’m not sure if it was better or worse not seeing the massive drops… but it definitely an exciting experience.

Popped out of the cloud along the ridge and made our way to Boyd-Wilson K**b, a beauty of a spot, a wee lump on a ridge. Some of these k**bs really make us wonder how they got there name, so if there’s any local k**b knowledge out there we would love to hear it!

K**b #17 ticked off ✔️ the quest for meaning in the humble k**bs of the world continues.

Chasing summits with the crew ✨

This has been the first summer in many years that I haven’t been for a trip up Mt Arthur. With the road being closed since the floods last year, I have definitely noticed how much we took it for granted. We have such awesome access to the outdoors in the Top of The South, and while I’m sure the Flora area is enjoying a break from humans. I can’t wait to get back into the local backcountry when possible 🫶🏻

For now we’ll be venturing off into other areas of our region and I hope with the great weather coming for this long weekend, you too are heading outside to enjoy it ✨

Concertina K**b #16/138 ⛰️
After a huge 12-hour push the day before from Nichols Hut to Maungahuka (via Shoulder K**b). If you know the section from Aokaparangi to Simpson, you’ll understand why we were pretty wrecked by the time we arrived at the hut on sunset. So this ‘rest day’ came at the perfect time and best spot!

We wandered down the Neill Forks track with light packs, starting on open tops before dropping into the most magical goblin forest. Spotted a Morepork, played a bit of concertina music, and honestly felt like a fairy might appear at any moment.

An easy few hours out and back, then straight back to soaking in the beauty of Maungahuka. One of those simple and special days, I’m a massive fan of Concertina k**b.

K**bs #14 & #15 / 138 ⛰️

A proper Tararuas day. Waking up at Nichols Hut to freezing wind, a hut full of TA walkers and we headed straight up the ridge before the weather could get any worse. The conditions were full white out, howling wind, and ‘just keep moving’ to stay warm kind of weather.

Summited Mt Crawford and dropped down to Junction K**b, which obviously was a track Junction. The rest of our trip would take us along the main range, but Shoulder K**b was just a short detour so we had to tick it off. After dropping off the ridge we suddenly were out of the cloud, staring down the coast with clear views all the way to the Kāpiti Coast!

Shoulder k**b may not be the biggest feature on the map, but somehow it earned its name and definitely earned its tick ✅

The Tararuas weren’t done with us yet… k**b 16 coming next ✨

Living out our van life dreams at one of the most picturesque camp spots ✨

While it’s probably not the most ideal time for a roadie, this wee trip was a much needed screen time break. A good reminder to slow down take the scenic route ⛰️
