🧊 A glacier disappearing before our very eyes ⏳
We are at the Mölltaler Glacier in Austria, at over 3,000 metres above sea level. And what we are witnessing here is truly alarming…
The Wurtenkees, part of the Mölltal glacier area, is retreating at an astonishing rate:
📉 42% of its surface area lost between 2020 and 2025
📏 Around 15 metres of glacier length lost every year
🧊 Nearly 2 metres of ice thickness lost annually reaching almost 3 metres in some years.
⏳ Its average remaining ice thickness is now just 12 metres
If this trend continues, glaciologists warn that the glacier could be reduced to scattered remnants of ice within the next decade.
What seems eternal within a human lifetime is actually disappearing before our eyes.
These landscapes are breathtaking, but they are also a powerful reminder of the reality of global warming. The images we capture today may soon become memories of a world that no longer exists.
The mountains are changing. And much faster than we think
🌍 Let’s take the time to observe, understand and protect what remains.
