Great picture to place the Falkland Islands and Antarctica on our planet .

A pretty cool photograph of Antarctica SUPPOSEDLY taken from ARTEMIS II. Whether it was or it wasn’t, quite frankly I don’t care. I like the image.

This image of a Black-browed albatross against a sunset in the Falkland Islands looks easy ! … It’s not really as out of the 22 nights we were in the Falklands I saw only 2 full clouds free sunsets ! … then you need the albatross … not just flying but making a turn in order to get the full vertical wingspan and last but not least the bird needs to turn against the sunset 😘 + the sunset does not last long and all needs to be more or less at eye level … I have some more images of my favorite bird in the Falklands against a more typical Falkland sunset with lines of clouds / different horizons etc … magical 🍾

One of my favorite birds of the Falkland islands , the Black-browed albatross , in this image seen in flight very early morning with the rising sun just shining on the bird for a couple of seconds only leaving the surroundings made of rocks and sea without much light .... natural colours ..... this ideal moment lasted only a few minutes at most 😘

A Gentoo penguin jumping out of a wave on its return to the beach after a day foraging food for the chicks ... What I was looking for here was to get a front view of the action ...😘 Falkland islands

During my stay in the Falkland islands earlier this month I spend a considerable amount of time photographing the black-browed Albatrosses and their now 2/3 month old chicks ...sometimes against the early sunrise /backlight conditions ... The graal here is when they spread their wings 😘 ... believe it or not but comes April the parents will one day simply stop feeding the chicks and leave the islands and after a few days of waiting in vain for food to come the chicks will have to fly off without any previous training from the high cliffs into the open South Atlantic sea and not come back to land for another 7/8 years when they will be ready to breed themselves !

I am happy to announce that my black and white picture "lost in the moment" of an Atlantic puffin on Saltee island, Ireland was awarded "Honorable Mention" in the annual Black and White Photography Contest of MONOCHROME PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS 2025 ( amateur / wildlife ) . I am quite proud of this award as black&white photography holds a special place in my heart as I find it extremely evocative and , especially today , very artistic. This is the first time I participated and I only put in 7 images...There is a professional and amateur section with various categories . Have a look at their website on www.monoawards.com . Great images . I got to know about them seeing their annual publication some years ago in a bookstore in London. Congratulations to all winners and honorable mentions.
Monochrome awards 2025 received 6634 pictures from 92 different countries.
