Borneo, particularly Sabah, has earned its reputation as an unparalleled treasure trove of biodiversity, showcasing an enchanting array of plant and animal species found almost nowhere else on Earth. This island's diverse landscape, which encompasses sprawling mountains and lush lowlands, serves as a cradle for an extraordinary abundance of flora and fauna, each intricately woven into its distinct ecosystems.
At the forefront of Malaysia's nature scene stands the illustrious Borneo Bird Festival (BBF), an annual congregation that draws nature enthusiasts from far and wide. With a primary focus on celebrating the majestic birdlife endemic to Borneo, the BBF serves as a platform for raising public consciousness about conservation endeavors and championing pursuits such as birdwatching and eco-tourism.
Over the years, this esteemed festival has consistently attracted an average of 5,000 visitors annually, including avid birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, bird clubs and conservation NGO's, all converging to revel in the wonders of its wildlife and birdlife.
Nestled within the heart of Sabah's verdant landscape lies the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) in Sandakan, a sanctuary that has become synonymous with the BBF's festivities. Here, amidst the towering canopies, thrives a rich tapestry of endemic species, including the iconic Bornean Bristlehead, the elusive Blue-headed Pitta, Bornean Falconet and the resplendent Black Crowned Pitta. Including the furry creatures, Bornean Orangutans, Sabah Gray Langur, Bornean Gibbon, the fascinating Red Giant Flying Squirrel, Horsfield Tarsier.
Beyond its role as a haven for wildlife, the BBF serves as a melting pot for nature enthusiasts, wildlife photographers, and communitiesβboth local and globalβwho come together to honor the intrinsic value of birds, wildlife and their habitats in sustaining our delicate ecosystem.
Furthermore, the recent expansion of the Rainforest Skywalk, now stretching an impressive 620 meters, promises an even more immersive experience for visitors, offering an unparalleled vantage point to admire the breathtaking beauty of Borneo's lush canopy and the myriad life forms it harbors.
