leur admiration pour cette harmonie entre l’Homme et la nature. Dans le prolongement des 8 livres publiés, à la manière d’un almanach,
le cycle des posts quotidiens correspond à la Génèse de cette création : l’eau, la terre, le feu, l’art de bâtir, vivre ensemble, transmettre la vie, action de grâce...

Batir
Maîtrise de l’art de bâtir et de la taille des pierres. Blocs taillés de récupération de temples antiques pré-islamiques ou blocs naturels à peine dégrossis; ce qui est disponible est mis a contribution avec justesse. Les moyens limités font les chefs d’œuvre. Rustique ou raffiné les assemblages sont réalisés dans une logique de l’utile, logique des formes et forces.

البناء
لقد أتقنوا فنون البناء ونحت الحجارة. ويستخدمون المواد المتاحة لهم بدقة ومهارة، سواء كانت كتلًا حجرية مُعاد استخدامها من معابد قديمة تعود إلى ما قبل الإسلام، أو كتلًا طبيعية لم تُهذَّب إلا قليلًا. فمحدودية الموارد تفضي إلى روائع فنية. وتُبنى المنشآت، سواء كانت بسيطة وريفية أو متقنة وراقية، مع التركيز على الوظيفة والشكل والقوة.

BUILDING
They have mastered the arts of construction and stone carving. They use whatever materials are available to them with precision, whether they are reclaimed blocks from ancient, pre-Islamic temples or natural blocks that have barely been rough-hewn. Limited resources give rise to masterpieces. The structures, whether rustic or refined, are built with a focus on functionality, form and strength.

Feu
La fabrication des fourreaux en bois des poignards/jambiyas est réalisée à l’herminette, la mise en forme du manche en corne avec des râpes et limes à bois. Sana’a 1986.

Fire
Wooden sheaths for daggers and jambiyas are made with an adze, while horn handles are shaped with rasps and wood files. Sana’a, 1986.

ترقّبًا لهطول الأمطار، تُعَدّ أخاديد المدرجات بعناية. أولًا، تتلألأ بانعكاس مياه الأمطار، ثم تتلألأ بإنبات الحبوب. جبل مسور، 2005.

The Earth
In anticipation of rain, the terraces' furrows are carefully prepared. First, they are illuminated by the reflection of the water, and then by the sprouting grain. Jebel Maswar, 2005.

Eau
Une pagaie fait office de palanche inversé pour débarquer un thonidé, tandis qu’un manche de bois associé à une planche racloir permet de rassembler, de ratisser les petits poissons mis à séchés sous les filets.

الماء
يُستخدم المجداف كرافعة مؤقتة لتفريغ أسماك التونة، بينما تُستخدم لوحة كاشطة ذات مقبض خشبي لجمع الأسماك الصغيرة وكشطها المتروكة لتجف تحت الشباك.

The water
A paddle is used as a makeshift lever to unload tuna, while a scraper board with a wooden handle is used to gather and rake up the small fish left to dry under the nets.

Actions de grâces
La célébration du mariage consacre la séparation des sexes : la rue est le territoire masculin. C’est depuis les fenêtres des maisons que les femmes assistent au défilé de la famille et des invités qui entourent le marié et aux danses entre hommes. Shibam 1990.

الامتنان
خلال احتفالات الزواج، يتعزّز الفصل بين الجنسين، إذ يصبح الشارع مجالًا خاصًا بالرجال. ومن نوافذ منازلهن، تستطيع النساء مشاهدة موكب أفراد العائلة والضيوف المحيطين بالعريس، وكذلك الرقصات التي يؤديها الرجال. شبام، 1990.

Gratitude
During wedding celebrations, the separation of the sexes is reinforced, with the street becoming male territory. From their windows, women can watch the procession of family members and guests surrounding the groom, as well as the dances performed by the men. Shibam, 1990.

دورة ﺍﻟﺤﻴﺎﺓ
ترتدي نساء جبل بُرَع فساتين من المخمل الأسود مزينة بأشرطة فضية، ومشدودة عند الخصر بأحزمة بيضاء عريضة. ويتزيّنَّ بقلادات من اللؤلؤ الفضي. وتشكّل هيئتهنّ عرضًا حيًا لأناقة بسيطة وهادئة.

TRANSMITTING LIFE
The women of Jebel Bura wear black velvet dresses trimmed with silver, which are cinched in at the waist with wide white belts. They accessorise with silver pearl necklaces. Their silhouettes are a living display of understated elegance.

VIVRE ENSEMBLE
Le rituel du café est un des premiers gestes de l’hospitalité. Les grains sont lestement et prestement torréfiés sur les braises, pilés encore verts avec de la cardamome.
La cafetière de laiton au ventre rebondi se prolonge d’un long bec courbe contrôlant un jet fin distillant les arômes. Yam, Arabie Saoudite 1984.

العيش سويا
طقوس إعداد القهوة من أوائل مظاهر الضيافة. تُحمَّص حبوب البن الخضراء بسرعة ومهارة فوق الجمر الساخن، ثم تُطحن مع الهيل وهي لا تزال دافئة.
يتميز إبريق القهوة النحاسي بجسم مستدير وفوهة طويلة منحنية، تنساب منها القهوة في خيط رفيع يفوح منه عبقها. يام، المملكة العربية السعودية، 1984.

LIVING TOGETHER
The coffee ritual is one of the earliest examples of hospitality. Green coffee beans are roasted quickly and skilfully over hot coals, then ground with cardamom while still warm.
The brass coffee pot has a rounded body and a long, curved spout that releases the aromas in a fine stream. Yam, Saudi Arabia, 1984.

Batir
L’expression de la construction en lits de terre superposés est tantôt affirmée tantôt recouverte d’un enduit de terre argileuse, enrichie de paille hachée. Les angles surélevés qui suivent la pierre angulaire de fondation se poursuivent au sommet des terrasses pour former des façons de pinacles.

البناء
يتكوّن المبنى من طبقات متراكمة من التراب، بعضها مكشوف وبعضها الآخر مغطّى بطبقة من اللياسة الطينية الممزوجة بالقش المفروم. وتتبع الزوايا المرتفعة حجرَ الزاوية في الأساس، وتمتد حتى أعلى المصاطب، لتشكّل عناصر تشبه القمم المدببة.

BUILDING
The structure consists of stacked layers of earth, some exposed and some covered in a clay plaster mixed with chopped straw. The raised corners follow the cornerstone of the foundation and extend to the top of the terraces, creating pinnacle-like features.

النار  من البحر إلى السماء. الأشرطة الأفقية الملوّنة التي تحدد خطّ الماء على الهياكل الخشبية لقوارب الداو أصبحت الآن بمثابة ساحة إقلاع للمروحيات. الحديدة، 1995.

Fire
From the sea to the sky. The horizontal bands of colour marking the waterline on the wooden hulls of the dhows now serve as a take-off pad for helicopters. Al Hudaydah, 1995.

Terre
Les vieilles robes et les chapeaux usagés, haut de forme à large bord, trouvent dans le Wadi Hadramawt une seconde vie en mannequin épouvantail pour dissuader les oiseaux de trop s’attaquer aux récoltes.

The Earth
Old dresses and worn-out hats, including wide-brimmed top hats, are given a new lease of life in Wadi Hadramawt when they are repurposed as scarecrows to protect crops from birds.
