The September issue has officially kicked off and what a story to get us started.

Thousands of negatives, a Leica acquired during WWII, postwar Europe, 1950s New York, experimental darkroom work…there are so many fascinating details in John Baer's story, but at its heart, this one is really about what our photographs can leave behind.

For and , the camera isn’t just a tool for making photographs. It’s a tool for storytelling, and a way to preserve culture.

In our latest podcast episode, we talk with the two London photographers and visual activists about their new collaborative book, Carnival of Resistance, which brings together more than a decade of photographs from Notting Hill Carnival.

We get into visual activism, collaborating with another photographer (and letting them challenge your edit 👀), and why getting those stories off our hard drives and into the world matters.

And the timing couldn’t be better: Notting Hill Carnival celebrates its 60th anniversary this weekend.

See the Notting Hill Carnival through the eyes of TWO featured photographers this month: A Celebration of Demonstration and Wayne Crichlow

Their project and book “Carnival of Resistance” is different from many books that have come before it. Rather than presenting a single visual language, it embraces two distinct perspectives on the same living culture.

And culture, after all, is never experienced in exactly the same way by any two people.

Their advice for young photographers?

don’t wait for someone else to tell the stories that matter to you.

Photograph your neighbourhood.

Photograph your family.

Photograph the people, places and traditions that shaped you.

The ordinary things you see every day may one day become part of your community’s history.

In doing so, you become the keeper of stories that might otherwise fade with time.

The next generation deserves to inherit more than headlines and statistics. They deserve to inherit memories, faces, laughter, celebrations and the small moments that reveal who we really were.

The camera is simply one way of making sure those stories are never lost.

What can a street photographer learn from an independent filmmaker? (I said this out loud as I typed and my 4 yo said “is that a joke?” 🤣)

Well it’s not a joke lol, and turns out, there’s a ton photographers and filmmakers can learn from one another. James Choi is a great example of that.

Interestingly, James recently contributed photos to the beautiful book “Seoul Days & Nights” from Trope Publishing Co. when he returned to South Korea, his home country after 46 years! We talked about our sense of identity, vulnerability in creative endeavors, and the importance of keeping it simple in a complicated world.
