This acrobatic Tūī is making the most of the nectar available!⁠🌾⁠

Tūī have a long brush-tipped tongue which makes it an excellent tool for lapping up nectar from flowers. They are one of New Zealand’s most prolific pollinators, and can often be seen feeding from kowhai and pohutukawa when in flower. They are extremely territorial and will vigorously chase away other birds from their feeding territories and sometimes sound like they'd rather get rid of humans too. I have seen many attack other birds in our grain feeder just because it was located in our pohutukawa in bloom, even though they would do nothing of the content!

Kaka, mischievious forest parrot, endemic to New Zealand, makes a come back to Wellington thanks to Zealandia, the ecosanctuary that fences out all sorts of imported predators to provide a safe haven to native birds, before they expand their territory way beyond our little capital city borders ! 🦜🦜🇳🇿

Rarotonga illustrates really well the role of forests and topography in shaping microclimates. The top of the island is nearly always bathed in mist created by the dense canopy, while the coast, only a few kilometres away is a lot drier 🏖 ⛰🏖
