A grey zone is a place of indefiniteness. It represents the lack of control and the difficulty of regain it. In an armed conflict, the term is designated to define the territory being disputed, but yet not controlled by none of the sides.

Although still quite active despite of cease fire agreements, the frontline between Zaitsevo (eastern Ukraine) and Gorlovka (controlled by separatists), remain an active combat zone and it has been under constant shelling since the war in eastern Ukraine began, in February 2014.

The civilian population, who still have to cross from one side to another, face the dangerous task of reaching the grey zone, a lawless strip of land, effectively controlled by nobody, where most of the fighting between the Ukrainian army and separatist rebels takes place.

Mikhitykva is a small village located just before the first checkpoint controlled by the Russian backed rebels, and after the last checkpoint controlled by Ukrainian forces. It is currently situated in-between two armies fighting this war. Ljudmila Vasilievna and Nikolay Nikolayevich are an elderly couple living there.

Once absolutely peaceful, places like Mikhitykva, now situated on conflict's borders, have been continuously caught in cross fire. The ones who decide to stay, are forced to adapt and learn how to cope with a life full of uncertainty.
