From our final park up near Mont Saint Michel, we had the pleasure of a rather rough crossing back over the English Channel last night from Cherbourg into a very wet and foggy Poole Harbour. Another long drive and we got back to Lakes around 4am this morning. It’s been a busy trip, exploring loads of places, in all weathers, across three countries. We return happy if a little tired, and full of knowledge that will help in our future travels. For now it’s back to the next phases of the van conversion, taking what we have learned and making some improvements to what we already have, to planning our next travels and to catching back up with family friends. France, Spain and Portugal (and Mary and Fernando) it’s been a blast… thanks for having us!

Having had to leave Arzon earlier than planned due to the winds we headed inland and found a great park up in Teillay. This is a small quiet commune in Brittany with just over 1000 residents. Aside from catching up on some much needed sleep, we also managed to get out and explore some of the Forêt de Teillay.

Must mention Chez Yann, the small town shop with its great handmade pizzas. The locals, who’s English was about as good as my French, were great and despite the language barrier we all managed to have a good chat while the pizza cooked. Tick!

As you may have seen on our post last night, we were in the Arzon region of NW France, sitting out Storm Ciaran, hoping we were far south enough to miss it.

Unfortunately we weren’t far south enough! The storm hit a bit further south than anyone expected with the Channel Islands and north western France getting hit hard overnight. Wind speeds hit at least 90mph where we were and we had a fairly sleepless night.

Fortunately we picked our park up well, clear of any potential falling trees (good job as you will see in the pics) and well aligned face on into the storm. Whilst we came out of it relatively unscathed, Arzon didn’t. As with much of NW France the storm has felled many trees, damaged buildings and sadly taken at least one life that we are aware of.

Understandably the authorities here were keen to shut everything down and make sure everything that needed to be checked was checked, and to ensure the clean up was dealt with quickly. As a result we did not get to see as much of this part of the world than we wanted, but totally respect their decision in the circumstances. So instead we have headed inland south of Rennes, but more on that tomorrow!

So we are horribly behind on our posts so here goes with an attempt to more or less catch back up again! Great couple of days on the beach at Saint Jean de Monts. Sadly very little in the way of good surf but still lots of cool stuff to see!

The largest of the French islands on the Atlantic coast was a great stopover and a chance to explore the islands and its many beautiful beaches. There is a real effort on the part of the French to keep the beaches clean - clean ups seem to happen pretty much daily here so to go from the pristine golden sands, with kite surfers a plenty to another stretch a bit further down the coast and see just how much plastic and waste is washed up the beaches is a real reminder of the impact we can have on the planet, both good and bad!

A wet day exploring the historic, and fourth largest city in France, Bordeaux. Beautiful architecture, big and bustling. A fine way to break up the journey north to our next stop, the Ile d’Orelon.
