Do you know kākāriki karaka? Taonga species, endemic to Aotearoa New Zealand, once widespread, declared extinct twice, only few hundreds individuals survive today.
These small 40ish grams parakeets live in alpine beech forest of Te Waipounamu / the South Island of New Zealand. Conservation efforts led by DOC and Ngāi Tahu focus on predator control, nest protection, and translocation to predator-free sites made possible by a captive breeding program.
Their latin name come from their slighly blue beak (cyano ramphus)
Orange-fronted parakeet - Perruche de Malherbe - Cyanoramphus malherbi.
