European Robin.

Whenever I'm struggling to track and photograph other small species of birds, I know that 99% of the time, I can stop, turn my head and find a robin perched up somewhere watching me. They're equally as hard to track when they are jumping from branch to branch, but they tend to be a lot more brave and willing to stay in one spot for a while, allowing me to fire off a few shots.

Mallard.

Maybe because it is one of the species I see the most, but I always end up avoiding or outright ignoring these birds when I'm out and about. I don't know why because I've always enjoyed the images I've created when photographing them. They're one of the calmer and easier species to photograph, and I'll always see at least one when I'm out. Even when I've seen no other species of bird, there are always ducks about.
I'm reminded of the quote from Dorothy L Sayers "How fleeting are all human passions compared with the massive continuity of ducks."
There is always a duck.

Female Blackbird.

On the ground among the fallen leaves and bushes this little female Blackbird was foraging for food. I'd stopped for a moment to try and find the smaller birds amongst the branches when I heard this one throwing the leaves about. So I crouched down and maybe 2 meters in front of me, there she was. She paused for a moment to look at me before continuing her feast.

Perching Great Tit.

Photographing Great T**s and similar sized birds is always a challenge due to their size and speed. Somtimes, I feel like tracking a bird in flight is easier than getting a little bird perched on a tree branch. Then I remember I've never caught a bird smaller than a Gull in flight. Hats off to the photographers who are able to catch these little guys in flight. Maybe one day I'll get one, through luck or skill. Hopefully the latter.

Capreolus capreolus

A family of Roe Deer grazing in the field.
I've very rarely seen deer this close to the city, it's always a welcome surprise when I do manage to spot some though.

Long-tailed Tit
Aegithalos caudatus.

Long-tailed t**s are always so active in groups, singing their hearts out, hopping from branch to branch, flying to the next tree and repeating the process.
This is the second time I've been able to photograph them sitting still for long enough, the first time being 10 years ago. Man, I've been doing this longer than I realised. Glad I stuck it out long enough to fall in love with the hobby again.

Treecreeper

Second time in this patch of woodland, second time photographing a tree creeper.
They are incredibly fast climbers, very hard to keep track of and seemingly always on the wrong side of the trunk.
Cute little birds.

Red Fox
Vulpes Vulpes

I wasn't the only one out enjoying the sun today.
After a record breaking 21 days of no sunshine, Aberdeen finally got blue skies and sunshine. This little guy was basking in the sun, soaking up the rays.

A Robin again...

This shot is straight out of the camera. For the first time when reviewing the images I felt I didn't need to do anything to an image.
Converted from RAW to JPEG with the Adobe colour profile in lightroom and that's it.
The robin was sitting perfectly in the spot of sunshine made from the tree canopy above.
This was also the last time Aberdeen saw actual sunlight, I know it's in the north but not /that/ far north.
It'll be visible again soon though, hopefully.

Mallard Duckling.

With the days lengthening, it's only a matter of time before our waterways are filled with newly hatched ducklings.
So far, the beginning of this year has been dreadful weather-wise here in Aberdeen. From deep snowfall for the first two weeks of January, to nigh on constant rain for the rest of it, I'm hoping for a nice dry Spring, and all the colours it brings with it. Anything is better than constant grey.
