Spring is well and truly here in Aberdeen, and I was lucky to make the most of it by doing this shoot with actor Lewis Masson. We spent a morning in Seaton Park and I’m so happy with the portraits we created. Aberdeen has truly the most beautiful setting when the weather is great! And Lewis did an incredible job. Like any great actor, he transforms completely in front of the camera. 📸

It’s always a joy when a client comes back for their headshots, and I’m delighted that Aimee booked me again this year! Aimee is a young actress and needed fresh headshots as she is joining a new casting agency.

Working with Aimee (when we first met last year,) felt like familiar territory because of my other job as a secondary school teacher. Aimee had some understandable concerns because she was keen to get a particular look for her headshots, and a previous headshot session with another photographer hadn’t captured what she was looking for.

So much of what we do as portrait photographers is using our people skills to bring out the very best in our clients. Plus, I can recall only too well what it was like to feel disempowered and self-conscious when I was a teenager.  It’s vitally important to me then, that all my clients feel heard so they get exactly the kind of portraits they are looking for.

One method I use to ensure this is that I always provide ‘instant reveals’ during my headshot sessions so my clients only get the images they want. This helped Aimee see the session as something where she could have a say, and she could see that the images were a tool that she needed for her acting, which helped give her a clearer idea of what she was looking for. I could see Aimee become more confident during the session.

It’s exactly what I do in my other role as a teacher, making sure my students understand fully what they’re learning and they can always feel free to ask me for help if they don’t understand anything.

Her mum wrote the loveliest Google Review afterwards, saying:

‘The time Seema took with my daughter to make sure they were exactly what she wanted was amazing. She got to look at the photos as they were being done which made the process really good for a teenager. If I could give more stars I would.’

This made my day and I was so pleased that Aimee got the kind of portraits she wanted!

We were so lucky with the weather last week when Lewis and I had our portrait session. Not sure we’d say the same about this week. 😅

One of my goals this year is to post a self-portrait. Part of that goal is to

1. stop over-complicating things
2. not give myself a hard time for not feeling photogenic that day! 
3. set up and tidy equipment away quickly (I usually take photos at home, so I turn my living room into my pop up studio.)

I often have to fight off internal negative comments because the self-portrait artists I follow, like Helen Hetkel and Sorelle Amore, are at least a decade and a half younger than me. But I was inspired by Struthless when he said ‘why not bet on yourself for a year?’ on one of his videos about creativity. So that’s my goal. If nothing else it will make me knowledgeable about the equipment I use and setting up in a short space of time.

And hopefully I’ll have twelve self-portraits to show by the end of the year!

On the first truly sunny day of the year, I headed out to Balmedie Beach with my former client Demmi.

One of my goals this year is to step outside my comfort zone and undertake more outdoor portrait shoots. I’m very used to working in controlled environments where studio lighting, backdrops, and everything exactly is exactly where I want it.

The beach is definitely not that!

There’s the wind, the shifting light and other unpredictable elements, like the unstable ground when getting to the beach by walking through the dunes.

It was fantastic to experience the fresh air, movement, and a sense of freedom that you can’t recreate indoors.

Demmi did a great job of embracing the elements during the shoot. And we enjoyed finally seeing the sun again after what seemed like forever.

When Penny Ward came for her headshot session, we spent time collaborating on what type of headshot and professional portraits will work best for her.

For many professionals across Aberdeen, updating your headshot feels bigger than it sounds. It’s your first impression before a networking event. It was a real pleasure to photograph Robert Milton late last year. I first met his wife, Laura Milton, at the Women in New Energy conference, and I’m very grateful that she recommended me when Robert was looking to update his headshots.
During the session we chatted about Robert’s studies and travels, which always helps create a relaxed atmosphere.
Robert later shared in his Google review that  “Seema gave clear guidance while still making the session feel relaxed and enjoyable.”
