Richards Of Aberdeen Textile Factory - May 2026

Richards of Aberdeen was a textile company based at the Broadford Works just off Hutcheon Street in Aberdeen.

Broadford Works was the oldest iron frame mill in Scotland and the last remaining textile mill in Aberdeen.

At its height it there were more than 3,000 people working at the mill.
Richards was purchased in 2002 by ian Suttie, chief execultive of First Oil whilst facing receivership.

In 2003 the company moved its headquarters to the outskirts of Aberdeen with some asssitance from Aberdeen City Council.

A year later in 2004 52 jobs were announced to be at risk and made redundant, soon after in 2005 the entire remaining workforce of 196 people were to go. Many had worked at the mill there whole lives.

The mill has since its closure sat unused and been a focal point for youths. There are plans to make the site into an urban village with 398 homes but so far very little site activities have started.

Eastern Green Link 2 - 23rd May 2026 - Second Visit

Pictures from the visit made last weekend showing the ongoing converter stations being built at Newton of Sandford and the drilling operations for subsea cables at Sandford Bay just across the road.

Eastern Green Link 2 (known as EGL2) is one of the most significant strategic energy infrastructure developments the UK has seen in recent years, connecting the north of Scotland to Yorkshire via the sea.

Large structures, large investments and a huge visual impact to the locals for the next 5 - 7 years.

Swire House, Altens Industrial Estate, Aberdeen - May 2026

Swire House is a modern large office building located on Souter Head Road within the Altens Industrial Estate, Aberdeen.

Built in 2012 for £4 million as the global headquarters for Swire Energy Services the building has recently sat empty for a number of years.

With a rateable value of £275,000 and failing to secure a buyer or tenant while the property sat empty, the owners have started to clear the site to make way for a more appropriate development tied to Aberdeen’s new Energy Transition Zone it is hoped.

Its very unusual for such a new building to be demolished but it just shows you how the market has changed after covid, how technology with the like of teams has reduced a physical office need and how the industry has dropped away.

ExPolice Scotland Queen Street Headquarters - May 2026

Not exactly the nicest of buildings but still a big part of Aberdeens history given what its purpose was and the fact it is does have a huge visual impact to the skyline.

Earlier in the month Aberdeen City Council approved the estimated funds for the demolition of the former police station but planning hasn’t been yet granted for the works looking at the planning portal.
