Many thanks to Peter Bayliss who gave a fantastic and good humoured talk on Friday. His subject was intentional camera movement (ICM). Unfortunalely I don't have an example of his work (unless Peter is reading this and can post one).

Urban Night Photography: Photographer Alistair How Comes to Ilkley Arts Festival

The Ilkley Arts Festival is set to shine a light on the magic of city nights as acclaimed photographer Alistair How presents an inspiring talk, Urban Night Photography, on Friday 21 November 2025. The event, held in partnership with Ilkley Camera Club, will take place at St Peter’s Church Hall, Addingham. Doors open at 7.00pm, with the talk beginning at 7.30pm. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

Whether bathed in the cool glow of blue hour or illuminated by the vibrant pulse of nightlife, cities reveal a dramatic new character after dark. Alistair will explore how the interplay of shadow, light and architectural form can transform ordinary urban scenes into striking photographic images.

From sweeping Docklands panoramas to the unexpected beauty of Leeds’ multi-storey car parks, he’ll showcase a wide range of locations and styles. The evening will also delve into the dynamic world of moving light—capturing the trails and rhythms of cars, trains and passers-by to create atmospheric, energetic compositions.

Attendees can expect expert guidance on composition, equipment choices and lighting techniques, along with practical examples to inspire photographers of all levels.

A must-see event for anyone passionate about photography or captivated by the mystery of the city after dark. Come along and be prepared to see the night differently.
