Autumn showing off down the Meon Valley Trail 🍂

We set out from West Meon this afternoon; Isla on her bike, and I walking alongside with my camera. Five kilometres later, she was still going, legs pumping, cheeks flushed, picking up every stick that looked good for crafts.

It’s only been since March that she learned to ride, but somewhere between the fallen leaves and the low morning light, I realised she doesn’t really need our help anymore; just our company.

The trail smelt of damp wood and crushed leaves, the trees whispering above, the sound of tyres humming quietly through the leaves. One of those small, ordinary walks that quietly feels like something much bigger.

Where’s your favourite place to walk when autumn turns everything gold?

We spotted this little stack of stones at the start of our walk from Refuge du Pré de Madame Carle, heading up towards the Glacier Blanc. Perfectly balanced, completely calm, and totally unbothered by the chaos of a family holiday.

It felt like a quiet metaphor.
For parenting.
For travelling with a five-year-old.
For remembering which bag the snacks are in.

Balance is a funny thing. One moment you’re soaking in the alpine views, the next you’re negotiating snack treaties, redirecting big rock jumps, and questioning whether a small person really does need another break just five steps after the last one.

But when it works, when it clicks into place, it’s beautiful. Like this rock stack. Wonky but somehow just right.

From the top of Serre Chevalier, past Rocher Blanc and up to Sommet de Prorel – one of those climbs where your legs ask “why?” but the views answer for you.

Lunch at Chalet Serre Blanc was the perfect reward before heading back down – 14km and a thousand metres of descent later and my quads still aren’t speaking to me.

Have you ever had a view that made the climb worth it?

Looking out from the mouth of the Grotte de Glace, carved deep inside the Glacier de la Girose near La Grave. A surreal experience and a reminder of nature’s quiet power. 🧊

This glacier has shaped the landscape here for thousands of years, creeping its way down the mountain slopes at just a few centimetres a day. Inside the grotto, you can see shimmering blue ice that formed centuries ago, compacted by layers of snow long since fallen. The glacier still moves, groaning and cracking like a living river of ice.

We spent the day hiking and exploring the ice caves, soaking in the history (and yes, some literal soaking too from the meltwater drips). It’s magical, humbling, and disappearing far too quickly.

Definitely worth the climb if you ever find yourself in this part of the Alps. Let me know if you’ve been somewhere like this — or if it’s now on your list.

Sometimes the Alps feel big in the valleys… but get a little higher and they remind you who’s boss. 🏔️

This is the head of the Vallouise Valley, with Glacier Blanc and Pointe de la Grande Sagne looking suitably dramatic.

Isla has now decided we’ll be ascending the glacier next week. I might need to start carb‑loading immediately. 🍝

Would you take the winding road up here… or are you sending me moral support from the sofa? 👀

High above Serre Chevalier at 8,135ft, the views of Rocher Blanc are something else. After two cable cars and a short walk, you’re rewarded with an incredible 360° panorama of the French Alps. In summer this area transforms into an adventure hub – mountain biking, hiking, mountain carting and zip lining all kick off from here.

Which would you choose first: bike, hike, cart or zip line? Or would you just sit and soak up the view (totally acceptable!)? ⛰️✨

📍 Vallée de la Clarée, French Alps

Haven’t posted in a while, but this felt worth sharing.

Walked back from Névache while Emma and Isla took the shuttle—just me, the alpine air, and this view. Not totally sure what the peak is, but I think it’s in Italy…

Would you have walked it or taken the shuttle?

Taking a moment to pause before the next chapter begins. This quiet morning at Frensham, with mist rolling over the hills and soft light filtering through the trees, was a perfect reminder that change, like nature, is full of beauty. Embracing the transition with gratitude.

What’s a moment of stillness you’ve cherished recently?

Given myself a few days to explore the north peaks area - weather was grey for the whole journey, but the sky cleared just as I arrived - stunning sunset after a very quick schlep up to Mam Tor - I’m taking it as a good omen for a walk tomorrow!

At the start of the year, I hadn’t run further than the boundary rope for around a decade. I realised my fitness wasn’t where it should be, and having hit my forties, I needed to do something to improve my health - heart disease is the biggest killer of men over 40. I took up running again and set my aim to be the Great South Run - 10 miles through Portsmouth, finishing along the sea front.

Sadly, Storm Ashley had other ideas and the run was cancelled. I spent most of yesterday in a bit of a funk, having had my goal taken from me, but I decided I needed to do something about it. Today I ran 10 miles from Alton to Ropley. Whilst exhausted, I feel proud that I have made myself better by the end of this year than I was at the start.

Why wait for a new year’s resolution when tomorrow is just as good a day to take charge of your health and happiness? Do you have any goals you’re ready to go after?

A 6km walk sounds simple. Add in 300m of vertical ascent in the first half, and the same steep descent in the second and it gets less simple, especially starting at 2k elevation already. Add in a 4 year old who requires bribery with snacks and ice cream back at the refuge and it gets harder. To top it off, add serious hail for 20 minutes on the descent and it’s just hard… However, hard things are worth doing, because of views like this, and experiences with the family that will provide memories forever…
