So yesterday (29th May) the blue tit chicks fledged. For 42 days we’ve followed the lives of a family of blue t**s. Yest...

So yesterday (29th May) the blue tit chicks fledged. For 42 days we’ve followed the lives of a family of blue t**s. Yesterday four chicks fledged the nest, with the third chick (first image) having second thoughts.
On average only 37% of fledglings make it to to a year old which is why blue t**s have such big broods. Yesterday that survival rate proved accurate with two of the four chicks being eaten by a stray cat. The death toll could have been higher had I not distracted the cat. Allowing the remaining chicks to fly to safety. The good news is we’ve heard both chicks today (30th May), with one in the hedges behind our house (chick number three) and one in some hedges in front of our house (chick number one). There is always the possibility of a second clutch but for now we’ll just have to wait. I’ll explain their adventures tomorrow.
