Llanddeusant Church

The church at Llanddeusant Church in northwest Anglesey is one of the historic parish churches of the island, and the village itself takes its name from it. “Llanddeusant” means “church of two saints,” referring to its dedication to Saints Marcellus and Marcellina.

The church has medieval origins dating back to the 12th century, although much of the building you see today was rebuilt in 1868 by the Welsh architect Goronwy Roberts. Like many Anglesey churches, it stands in a quiet rural setting surrounded by farmland and old lanes, giving it a very traditional Welsh parish feel.

Llanddeusant, Anglesey

Llanddeusant, Anglesey is a small rural village on the island of Anglesey, about 10 miles northeast of Holyhead. Its Welsh name means “Church of Two Saints,” referring to Saints Marcellus and Marcellina, to whom the parish church is dedicated.

The village is known for its quiet farmland landscape, Welsh-speaking heritage, and links to local mythology. One famous legend says that Branwen from the medieval Welsh tales of the Mabinogion is buried nearby at “Bedd Branwen,” close to the River Alaw.

One of the biggest attractions is Melin Llynon, the only fully working traditional windmill in Wales. Built in 1775, it was restored in the late 20th century and today operates as both a heritage attraction and cafe site.
