Thought an update cover photo was long over due. Thought this one of David in the V&A, london might suit?

I entered this to the Summer RA exhibition a few years ago and got short listed from over 11,00 entries. Sadly not hung as it was too large!

Call now to connect with business.

Each photographer develops their own style, not only in the way they shoot images on the wedding day but in how they edit them afterwards.

Having originally trained as a press photographer, black & white film photography and more recently as an editorial & fashion photographer in digital photography. My style is what is often called ‘Reportage’.

My aim is to capture the day and tell a story. To record all the planned and unplanned moments that makes each special day different.

When it comes to editing I choose each image and edited them individually’ This often means that the work day of the wedding is followed by a further 2 more work days editing.

Whenever possible I use natural light, but some churches and civil rooms do require a flash to lighten dark areas. Flash is nearly always required at the events late into the night, usually up to and including ‘first dance’

To ensure correct and accurate colours I use an X-Rite Colour Checker at the wedding and only edit on a colour calibrated monitor. This process helps ensure accurate colour reproduction of any prints: https://www.xrite.com/

Which brings me to the use of editing pre-sets. Many photographers will purchase ready made pre-sets for them to apply to their images and batch process; aiming for a certain ‘look’ achieved by using a specific tint and tone of colour.

I wanted to give just a few examples of what a ‘pre-set’ can do and how photographers can use these to create their ‘style’. The pre-sets have been applied to my same image.

The first example will be my natural and accurate colour style. The second image is using the pre-set of a well respected American wedding photographer, the third another highly acclaimed wedding photographer and Sony Ambassador.

I do send every couple a selection of images also in black & white. Here again are with images, as I edit and then with the pre-sets applied.

Comment what you think about the styles, which would you want to receive?

Every Bride & Groom (and the photographer) hope for good sunny weather for a summer wedding in the UK.

The week commencing 4th of September did not disappoint, though at 30° a few of us melted!

At the wedding of Simon & Claire at the Bridport, Dorset Registry Office. A beautiful high ceiling room, lit by windows on three sides from floor to ceiling the blinds were certainly needed as sunlight poured into the room.

Shade was found for the photographs afterwards under a very large tree.

The couple and the guests then walked to The Bull Hotel, in East Street, Bridport for the reception.

Yesterday was the first Photography Workshop, for The National Trust, held at Barrington Court, Somerset.

Following quickly on the heels of the closure of Dillington House, Somerset County Council education centre, a photography workshop was organised by The National Trust, with a view to fill local needs.

Further courses are being planned on a variety of photography subjects.

Even the rain in-afternoon, could not dampen students' enthusiasm for learning in the superb location that is Barrington Court.

The next course is on Wednesday 11th October 2023. If you would like to book on follow this link

From a week of indifferent weather emerged a very hot day; for the wedding of Mike & Kim at Kennaway House.

Kennaway House is a hidden gem in the heart of the picturesque seaside town of Sidmouth.

A Regency mansion, now fully restored, standing in its own grounds. To complete the day a beautiful bride in a classic Jaguar car.

No Devon-based wedding photographer could ask for more.

From the arrival of the bride, driven by her son.

To the end of the day as the happy couple depart.

Autumn Wedding shoot collaboration at Dillington House

I had an idea to bring together a group of wedding professionals to create something very special at an Autumn wedding shoot.

The idea took form from seeing the exquisite wedding dresses in the window of Bridal Reloved, in my local town, Axminster. Proprietor Lian was keen to make it all happen with an Autumn theme.

https://bridalreloved.co.uk/

With her extensive contacts and organisation, assisted by one of my photography students Samantha, we used the premises of Dillington House, Ilminster (where I am the photography lecturer).

The day started with two models, four dresses, one hair stylist, one make-up artist, a florist and two photographers. Most of us had not worked with each other before.

It was great fun and the feedback from the team to me was.

“Wow these are incredible images. Please can we work together again?”

I have plans underway for a Spring collection for 2024 is being planned for a shoot in Sidmouth.

First to start the day was the very experienced, freelance hairstylist, Lizzy with the beautiful model Alice. The hair styling was superb, from the start to the finish.

Alice moved across from hair to make-up, with another very experienced professional, Lisa Hannah.

For the next model, the beautiful Stephanie Lansdown, another styled creation by Lizzy followed by make-up by Lisa.

Incredible work by both, in a very happy environment they created with both models and each other. As a photographer I was ‘at the window peeping in’. Their professional work is a pleasure to photograph.

Gorgeous model Stephanie Lansdown completed hair and make up ready for the shoot.

Throughout the day I was accompanied by the creative ideas photographer, Samantha.

Four very different dresses were supplied by Bridal Beloved of Axminster.

The Bride’s bouquets of seasonal fresh cut flowers, sustainably grown, were supplied by Charlotte.

Throughout the shoot hair and make up professionals Lizzy & Lisa were on hand.

Behind the scenes is a lot of planning by everyone, even including myself!

The backdrop for the day, of Dillington House, has sadly now closed to the public and returned to the private hands of the family. I continue to teach and now will be working, just down the road, with The National Trust at Barrington Court.

These images have to be, just a few from over 500 supplied to the team, and perhaps you will see more appear on their websites; so once again a big thank you to all involved and see you at the next one in early 2024!

Well we all survived the day and the weather was kind to us.

This is one of the last courses, organised by Somerset County Council, through Dillington House, before it closes at the end of the month.

Students enjoyed themselves today and several are going to join me, along with other former students and new, for my future photography courses. These will now be run with The National Trust and delivered at The National Trust location of Barrington Court, Somerset.

Last week, my walk, which wandered a little too far across Dorset on The National Trust Stonebarrow walk on the Golden Cap Estate.

I returned to this and another National Trust walk at Lambert’s & Coney’s Castle in preparation for tomorrow's Landscape Photography course, see my previous post.

It also seemed wise to see what the torrential rain, thunder & lightening from last night had done to the paths.

First Lambert & Coney Castle, looking out across Pilsdon Pen towards Broadwindsor, Dorset.

Even late afternoon the low cloud had yet to lift and all I can show you is a ghostly tree in the cloud! (Image 2)

By the end of the walk matters were improving, to this level. (Image 3)

Onwards, with the prospect of ‘fine’ weather to find a shorter route on the National Trust estate at Golden Cap, Dorset.

I traced a suitable one hour route for tomorrow’s landscape photographers with views such as these below.

Down a narrow and overgrown old smugglers path towards the coast, this is a fine view even on a day or poor weather (Image 4)

This leads you out to the coastal path and views such as Image 1.

But, please remember to be careful and look out for coastal erosion. This is a minor slippage towards the coast and recently there was a large coastal slippage into the sea, as evidenced by the final image.
