This freshly fledged swallow(only an hour out of the nest) , calling for food, is from the third brood this year. It will have to get its skates on and become independent pretty quickly, as the 6,000–7,000-mile migration back to Southern Africa will begin in a few weeks' time. Some swallows are already preparing for the journey home.

I have recently found a new location where there are several juveniles from an earlier brood and a single male, so hopefully the female is sitting on a second brood.

This female green woodpecker has raised three young this year, and her plumage is looking a little bedraggled.
Not long after they fledged, all four birds were lined up on our ash tree. I rushed for my camera, but the battery was on charge. By the time I'd inserted the battery and rushed to the back door, they had gone.
Oh well, a single bird it is then.
