The Glossy Ibis was once a rare winter visitor, but it now appears in much greater numbers, with a notable influx in 2025.

Although they can look dark from a distance, their plumage comes alive in good light, shimmering with greens, bronzes and purples. This iridescence gives the species its name.

A Scarlet Ibis seen first thing on a morning walk... A complete surprise because they are not native to the UK. Usually only found in zoos or private collections. It was ringed, though I couldn’t read all the details and i later learned it was known to visit here.

Native to northern South America and the Caribbean, they live in coastal wetlands and feed on crustaceans, which gives them their brilliant red colour.

I’d spent a previous day with this kingfisher and got loads of perched shots, but capturing one in flight was painfully difficult.

I injured my shoulder last year and even with physio, needle therapy and everything else, it still hasn’t fully recovered. It’s limiting what I can do with the camera, especially when it comes to action shots. I could use a tripod or monopod, but I’m a stubborn toad and refuse to carry one on my walks. I’ll keep trying though!

Using the seed head as cover, this female bearded reedling feeds from underneath. Her plumage mirrors the colour of dried autumn and winter reeds so closely that she’s nearly invisible.

This tawny has become a celebrity!

I have watched this tawny for over a year, but recently I've seen so many people sharing this owl. I know from my own visits in the last year that the tawny doesn't care for the camera or peoples presence but i still limit my time here, i check in to see if the owl is still around when i visit and move along after a few pictures. This image was taken back in Autumn.

Did you know...

The song thrush’s chest markings vary slightly, almost like a fingerprint. Researchers can sometimes use these unique patterns to identify individual birds in studies without the need for rings, especially from photographs. The speckled chest isn’t just pretty, it’s one of a kind, and no two thrushes have exactly the same pattern.

A spoonbill sideway glances me, with its long, spatulate bill open in mid-motion. This distinctive bill, flat and widening at the tip like a spoon, is perfectly adapted for feeding in shallow waters.

They say third time lucky, and when it comes to me and wildlife photography, that's often true with subjects i haven't shared with you.

I’d spent two hours walking in poor morning light, without lifting the camera, when i watched a small flock of birds pass me, heading for a group of trees in the distance. I had guessed at them being Crossbills from shape and sound but couldn't see them well to confirm. To my surprise, as I approached this group of trees sometime later, I heard the sound of Crossbills chewing their way into cones.

That sound rewarded me with my closest encounter so far. Normally i spot them in the tops of tall trees, but a few males could be seen feeding lower down. I raised the camera, did my absolute best in the poor light and struck 3rd time lucky!

🌅 Starting the New Year with one of my favourite comeback stories... The Red Kite 🦅

Did you know Red Kites were reintroduced into the UK in 1989? I was only two years old back then, completely unaware that one day these birds would become a huge part of my life.

Here in Basingstoke, they slowly became more common around 2010–2015. By 2016 I’d picked up my first dslr camera, though the lens far too short, the photos questionable, but the passion already there.

After years of grafting, saving, learning, and upgrading my kit, I was finally able to photograph them properly.
And while I was working hard behind the lens, the kites were working hard too…

From fewer than 5 breeding pairs to over 10,000 Red Kites in the UK today, their recovery is my favourite conservation success story.

As I step into 2026, I’m reminding myself of something these birds represent perfectly... Growth takes time, patience pays off, and the slow climb is still progress.

I hope 2026 brings you the same sense of freedom the kites bring me.

I saw a lady trying to take a photo of Eddy on her phone, but he kept moving about. I offered to help, and we got chatting. She was hoping to capture Eddy with the boat in the background, as someone she knew was on board.

She asked if I could take the picture, but I only had my big lens with me. That meant stepping back quite a distance just to fit Eddy in, lining up the boat, and then taking separate shots to stack together later. (Before and after shown below)

Not how I usually do things, but sometimes you just make do in the moment.

I'd like to welcome Grace, an 8 year old Rottweiler, daughter of a long-haired father and a short-haired mother. From a young age, she has captured the hearts of many, especially at dog shows and fetes. She has helped countless children overcome their fear of dogs with her gentle nature. Grace also faced a serious cruciate injury, and after a long recovery of 1 year and 5 months, she has done incredibly well, showing remarkable strength and resilience.

Grace and her owner Alistair Cook have since set up business Pace With Grace so if you are looking for a local dog walker, please check out their page and get in touch.
