When the cloud rolled in over Salisbury Plain last night I thought that it had put paid to my chances. But at around midnight, when the activity was peaking, I did manage to get a half decent shot of the aurora.

Leopards are quite shy, and nocturnal too, so it was great to find this one as it was getting up and preparing for a night's stalking.

Who doesn't love a good scratch behind the ears?

Most of the Jackals that we saw were fairly wary of the vehicle. However, this pair were quite relaxed in the late afternoon and happily continued their mutual grooming unbothered by our presence.

Maasai Mara 2022

We spent quite a long time watching these Spotted Hyaena cubs playing in the evening light. They are part of an extended family from quite a large den in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy. Hyaenas get quite a bad rap generally, but we don't think that they deserve it.

Maasai Mara June 2022.

I'm working through the best part of 10,000 photos captured on a recent trip to the Maasai Mara Conservancies. Its over 10 years since I was last in Africa and with very little time available this year for planning, we decided to travel with someone who knows the region well and booked a trip with Alison Mees Photography. Alison has spent many years living and working in Africa, most recently in the Mara Conservancies. She knows many of the camps from personal experience and we would highly recommend her trips.

First up on our trip, literally fifteen minutes after landing at the Olare Motorogi airstrip was an encounter with Kweli, a cheetah mother whom Alison has been watching since a cub. The family had a fresh gazelle kill and managed to finish it off without interruption. We caught up with them again just after sunrise the following morning, when the cubs were clearly well fed, relaxed and full of energy.

Its been an age since I’ve had time to get out with my camera, but when I saw the weather forecast for this morning, I had to give it a go. The best angle I could get without a boat!
