Dear all,

I am very pleased to announce that the production of my second photobook, “Galamsey,” is now approaching completion.

This is a self-published project and a major undertaking — the result of many years of work, commitment, and the support of extraordinary people who believed this story deserved to exist in the form of a photobook.

I am deeply grateful to Arts Council of Northern Ireland and The National Lottery, as well as to all private supporters who made seven years of work in Ghana possible.

The book includes a selection of photographs edited by Tomasz Tomaszewski, a introduction by principal investigator Melani Mennella, and an foreword by photographer and filmmaker Ed Kashi.

The production of this limited edition requires significant resources, which is why I am opening a pre-order campaign to help complete the final stage of publication.

First copies will ship in July

We are delighted to share that Black Star Polo story documented by our studio manager Mariusz Śmiejek has been recognised at the Sony World Photography Awards World Photography Organisation in the professional category, selected from over 430.000 images sent from over 200 countries, and it will be exhibited in London at the Somerset House, as well as included in the official awards publication book.

Special thanks to Canon UK Canon for supporting this project with the incredible Canon EOS R5 and RF lenses — Canon RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM and Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM — which proved to be outstanding tools in telling this story.

Another photo exhibition printed at 1G1 Studio will be open tomorrow!!!

Behind the scenes of installing Mariusz Śmiejek photography exhibition “Galamsey.” Published by National Geographic Magazine Poland

While gold prices reach historic highs on global markets, workers in Ghana’s illegal galamsey mines earn as little as $3–$5 a week. Nearly a third of the country’s gold comes from these dangerous sites, where toxic mercury, child labour, violence, and environmental destruction are part of everyday life.

Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer, yet billions of dollars’ worth of gold flow to China, India, Switzerland, the U.S., and the UAE, leaving local communities with poverty, polluted rivers, and rapidly disappearing forests.
