'Droichead Fuilteach'...
Quick hike up the Midpace River (subsequently named the Bloody Bridge).
I know my friends call me a mountain goat but Clรฉmence truly put me to shame as she literally sprinted up the mountain ๐
Gave her a quick history lesson on why it's actually called the 'Bloody Bridge' and the macabre sectarian slaughter that took place there ๐ซฃ
During the outbreak of the 1641 Irish Rebellion, this quiet coastal crossing on the A2 became the site of a brutal massacre. A group of Protestant settlers, held captive and being marched under es**rt, were attacked by rebel forces commanded by local commander George Russell. Contemporary records note that the prisoners were hacked, slashed and cut to pieces at the river crossing, and their bodies thrown into the water. The scale of the bloodshed was so severe that the river reportedly ran red, permanently branding the location with its grim Irish name, Droichead Fuilteach.
