Esther Irvine Photography

Esther Irvine Photography Creative documentary wedding photographer in Northern Ireland, based on the shores of Belfast Lough. I probably would have laughed. The vision was short-lived.

If someone told a younger me that by 2014 I would be a full time wedding photographer. And here I am in 2017, heading towards my 100th wedding. With a Degree in Law and qualifications in International Trust Management, I had visions of myself living in the Bahamas and doing all sorts of (legal) things with taxes. It just so happens, I actually have a strong dislike for mathematics and anything to

do with tax. In 2011 I had my first taste of wedding photography, when a good friend asked me to take photographs on the morning of her wedding. She based my ability on the photographs I had taken at her hen party. I am laughing even writing this. Said photographs remain under lock & key. I was given total freedom to photograph as I wanted. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed myself and how natural it felt. Fast forward into 2012 and there I was, in London, at...Westminster Abbey...undertaking my first wedding. I have my mum to thank for giving me photography as a creative outlet. Waved off on summer camps and school trips with a camera in hand, and a gentle reminder to "try and get some people in the pictures." I had a track record of bringing home rolls of film with blurry images taken out bus windows and fairly uninteresting images of buildings and fields. When people did feature in the photographs, it was usually an out of focus image of the back of someone's head that I had taken whilst in hot pursuit during a game of 'chasies'. In spite of questionable image quality...looking back, even as a child, I can see that I had a desire to use a camera to tell stories of what I was experiencing, seeing and doing. Now, I get to tell stories for other people. And I get to call that my job. You can visit my website to read more about

I love these words by Alan Watts. He’s referencing a Lao Tzu idea that once we reduce reality to a few neat categories (a handful of “colours” or “tones”), we miss how much is actually there. I won’t over-philosophise (my Achilles heel 🤪), but it’s a beautiful thought to sit with. So, here’s to a bit more noticing 🤲🏼 wedding

There are so many reasons why I enjoy taking photographs. But this photograph sums up why I do what I do. There are so, so many beautiful things to photograph on a wedding day, be it people, places, light, styling etc - it’s a long list. And I love it all. But at the top of that list for me will always be connection. In all its forms. Sometimes obvious, sometimes subtle, but always real and always moving. You know it when you see it, because when you see it you feel it. At Mark & Rebecca’s wedding, I came away with so many photographs that I love. But I love this one the most. The connection between their mums. In my eyes, so beautiful.

Every mile of the drive was worth it to spend the day with Niall & Deirdre in this magical part of Ireland! I feel like a broken record when I’m asked about shooting weddings, but I always say the same thing. Whilst I love taking photographs, so much of it for me is about the people I meet. I come away from weddings with thousands of photographs but I also leave with a mind and heart full of moments and stories from the people in those photographs. The two are connected, both are equally important and that’s why I shoot weddings. I know it’s clichéd to say it’s a privilege to be a part of someone’s wedding, but that’s exactly what it is. Thank you again and for inviting me to beautiful County Cork.

Sláinte to this incredible pair who weathered a truly Irish summer this weekend. Cian & Natasha exchanged vows in the beautiful ruins of St. Oliver Plunkett’s church. As the rain fell and the brollies went up, the smiles just got wider! I wish I could have bottled the feelings from this day. It was a privilege to witness and photograph the love and happiness at this wedding.

A few weeks back I got to get on an aeroplane, that’s right folks, an aeroplane, and make the short jaunt across the Irish Sea to spend the weekend with Dan & Lauren. Another example of a couple who smashed it out of the park after having several wedding date changes. What a pleasure it was to photograph their intimate backyard wedding at Dan’s beautiful family home. And the weather was on fire - which always helps!

Such an adventure I had with this sweet pair. We started off at a beautiful, and very special, country house where Zara spent large parts of her childhood. We then meandered out to the coast to the incredible Murlough Bay - what a gem that is! I love taking pictures, but it’s the people in the pictures that make it for me. I feel so lucky to get to meet and spend time with such great people. Phil & Zara are two of those great people.

Working on yet another glorious backyard wedding. The lovely Gareth & Marti were due to get married in Greece & thanks to our old friend covid, plan B had to be activated. But what a plan B it was. And what a couple they are! An outdoor ceremony in the grandparents garden, a tractor-filled shed turned into a draped wedding wonderland & some beaut little vintage wheels for good measure 👌🏻👫🏼🚗 🎉 As always a pleasure to shoot alongside 🎥
