I’m beyond delighted to say that my portrait of Bridie Brown has been shortlisted & featured in the ‘Portrait of Britain’ vol 7 book.
-
I’ve always enjoyed the ‘Portrait of Britain’ & ‘Portrait of Humanity’ books and have maybe occasionally daydreamed of having work in one of them.. It’s special that it is a portrait that means a lot to me, of a powerful woman, still fighting for justice.
-
Bridie Brown’s husband Sean Brown was abducted and murdered in May 1997, just months before long term peace broke out in Northern Ireland. One of many innocent victims at that particular time, Sean’s killers have never been brought to justice. Like many others, Bridie continues to fight for justice with dignity and perseverance.
Location: Bellaghy, County Derry.
-
The portrait was made while getting production stills for a documentary on Sean’s murder that was shown on earlier this year. It’s a powerful piece of tv by that I recommend you take the time to watch. (Link in stories)
-
Sincere thanks to:
-Jim O’Hagan at for the original commission.
- .mccullough who had a big hand in me getting the gig in the first place.
- everyone at & (especially Sinead) for their seamless communication & sincerity.
-
But mostly I thank the Brown family for allowing me into their home to make these images while they continue their brave battle against the might of the British state, for justice, for Sean. If this image’s inclusion brings more people to witness the Brown’s struggle for justice, it will have been a force for some good. As we see more and more each day, justice can never be taken for granted.
Love and strength to all the people struggling and fighting for justice today & every day. ✊❤️
Joe.

Friends.. I am participating in an initiative called 'Ireland prints for peace' (look up on insta)
-
It is a collective of Irish artists (mostly photographic artists) selling prints to raise funds for UNWRA in Gaza, to try and help in some small way with the devastating situation that people there are facing with starvation & incessant bombing.
-
The first round of print sales in late 2023 raised over €18,000 for MSF / Medical Aid Palestine
-
The prints are priced as follows:
A4 - €60,
A3 - €100
A2 - €150.
-
I have these three prints for sale
- Dissolving Path (2022)
- Esker Quarry - (2023)
- Donegal Coast (2023)

The prints are professionally printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Matte paper.

Please consider buying one or maybe sharing the post.
DM me for purchasing details.

Thanks
Joe.

Just over a year on since I last posted about ‘Semblance’ (a body of work I have been toiling away at in the background), I’m delighted to say that the project has been Supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
-
The funding will go towards making a film that will sit within this wider body of photographic work, the working title of the film is ‘A winter of the mind’ and it will examine themes of rural isolation, environmental anxiety and walking like your life depended upon it. All photographed and filmed in the vague geographical area of ‘mid ulster’ in the north of Ireland.
-

I’m excited to start filming this in the coming weeks and am extremely grateful to and also to / for assistance in making the application.

Over €18,000 raised by a collection of Irish based photographic artists over the last few weeks. Honoured to have contributed to this cause and hope that it makes a small bit of difference to the unbearable suffering the Palestinian people are suffering at the minute.
A huge thanks to the folks who bought my prints and to everyone who supported this brilliant initiative by buying prints.. Hats off to the dedicated group of organisers for pulling it all together👏👏👏
