Before I abandoned my post and fled back to the Masai Mara for the season, I made sure to capture photographic evidence of the local wildlife back home: the McTavish Clan.

Enter Gordon, Torrie, and baby Cardi, three absolute bundles of pure mischief and unmitigated mayhem. I’m currently taking bets on whether they’ll ever forgive me for swapping their chaotic energy for a bunch of other wild animals in the Mara.

To be fair, the lions in Kenya might actually be a bit more predictable!

They told me I wouldn’t ride again.

After a road collision in 2014 left me dealing with chronic, debilitating right shoulder pain, I genuinely thought my touring days were a matter of history. A heavy bike nearly finished me off, but transitioning to a lighter, upright ride has rewritten the script. It turns out hip-driven cornering is sweeter than driving a car.

To prove the point, last Monday I took it out for a mahoosive Bank Holiday loop: Skirling up through Glencoe to Oban, a tactical detour via Dunoon to dodge the Loch Lomond traffic jams, and a coastal run past the brave souls eating questionable BBQ chicken in Largs, finishing with a final frame near Ardrossan.

I brought the drones along for the ride. Here is Scotland looking its finest.

Glencoe & Coastline: DJI Mavic 3 Classic

The Edit: 9-shot wide-angle stitch, 16:9 crop, processed via Lightroom, Neo, and Topaz Labs.

Proof that the right tool for the job changes everything—whether it's the bike or the camera.

It’s Endless Blue...

I’m trying to get out at least once a week to capture images or video, hell, maybe even both, provided I can get my arse in gear and keep my eyes on the prize. But sometimes, I just want to shoot panoramics that I can explore like a living map, zooming in and out to find little surprises tucked away in the vast expanses, like the amorous couple by the gorse, getting really rather heated. 🥴😅

Yesterday, Tuesday the 5th, I headed to Brighouse Bay in Dumfries and Galloway. It’s a very pretty wee place, though the highlight was watching an elderly couple and their pretendy wee dog scarper the moment a Ned family and their Nedlings descended upon the beach shouting "Wallopers!" Nae class!

Anyhoo... these were all taken using a Mavic 3 Classic with a CPL filter, then edited in Lightroom, Luminar Neo, and Topaz.

Thinking June is just around the corner, I decided it was high time for a final hit of Scottish "summer" before heading back to the Masai Mara. I opted for a 300-mile ferry-hopping loop of the West Coast.

The forecast promised sun and warmth. Naturally, I set off in a grey drizzle so pervasive it caused a level of personal physical shrinkage I won’t dwell on, other than to say it was medically concerning.

I arrived at Wemyss Bay just in time to watch the 11:15 ferry depart without me. I’d spent the preceding miles auditioning for a remake of Duel behind a campervan driver whose concept of lane discipline and spatial awareness was purely theoretical.

Once on Bute, the cold became an existential threat. I was forced to seek out the shopping metropolis of Rothesay to buy an emergency jumper. The moment I pulled it over my head and reached Colintraive, the sun emerged with a vengeance. I spent the remainder of the day roasting in my own poor decisions.

At the Tighnabruich viewpoint, I was met by a flock of cycling "Hoorays" on a break from Uni no doubts, they had that Glasgow weird vocal affliction many of them develop, even a wee Malky or Betty from Drumchapel get it.

Dinner in Inveraray was a fish supper featuring batter with the structural integrity of wet dough. It was expensive enough to require a second mortgage and so offensive that even the local seagulls, birds that usually view a discarded chewing gum as a delicacy, spat it back out.

I did manage to get the drone up on Bute, Tignabruich view Point, Portavadie and the Rest and be Thankful for some panoramas. If nothing else, the photos will prove I was there, even if my nerve endings suggest otherwise.

A brilliant day, despite the culinary trauma. Everyone should do the ferries; they are affordable, efficient, and a reminder that Scotland will always find a way to keep you humble.

Six weeks until Kenya. I suspect the lions will be easier to digest than that fish.

I covered over 300 miles on this 14 hour jolly. I took a DJI Mini 4 Pro with me and a Sony RX10 iv, the latter never came out.

Frustration knows no bounds....

A few days ago, I went for a wander up Gameshope, scouting the many waterfalls, the lazy way, I flew the drone up and marked the ones I wanted. Today, Saturday 25th April, I went up layden with gear to work my way along taking many, what I hoped, would be mega shots. I scrambled down the hillside with Toorie (my wee Scotty Dog Assistant) and got set up with my tripod.
Now, on the way up a woman appeared with her three dogs, one of them was on the lead, and two off the lead, so I quickly got Toorie in hers and waited for her to pass, muttering something as she did.
Now, in all this distraction, my pouch carrying my magnetic filters must have got dislodged from my strap, because it wasn't there when I went to get it.... S**t!!! Put the drone up and sent it down the track and couldn't see it. There was nobody there, so I brought the drone back, took two images with it, packed up and set off all the way down the track to find it lying in the grass.
So this is the fruits of my efforts 😅

Happy to say my Lilac Breasted Roller image will be on show at the Glasgow Photography Gallery in July this year. The print they use will be for sale, and available for collection at the end of the exhibition. It's being sold for £65. If you want it, or want to reserve it, let me know before the exhibition and I will let the gallery know.
I won't be there at any point as I'll be back in the Maasai Mara from June until November.

Second set of images were taken with my Dji Mavic 3 Classic. Sadly I was having issues with a gimbal that decided it wanted calibrated and it didn't quite work, so only a few panos worked.

The images that did though, I am happy.

All but the last two on Rannoch Moor at Lochan na h-Achlaise.

I’m sharing two sets of photos from a little road trip through Glen Etive, Rannoch Moor, and Glen Coe this week.

This first collection was captured with my DJI Mini 4 Pro. While the weather wasn’t exactly "classic" photographer’s drama, the conditions were incredibly kind in their own way. The air was so still that Lochan Urr turned into a perfect mirror.

It’s all "practice," which is just a professional term for making expensive mistakes.

There is a very specific, butt-clenching sensation when the handset flashes "strong wind, aircraft cannot return to home." For a few heart-stopping moments, my arse was twitching like a bunny’s nose. Thankfully, I’m not currently a loss to the beauty of Coulter Fell, and I actually managed to bag a few images.

I’m clearly a sucker for my toys, lugging around both a DJI Mini 4 Pro and the Mavic 3 Classic. The Hasselblad panoramas are incredible, massive, immersive files where you can see every detail on a big monitor. Naturally, I then upload them to Facebook so its compression can turn all that Swedish engineering into a blurry mess that looks like it was shot on a Haggisblad.

Anyway, it’s all fun. Or at least, that’s what I tell myself while my heart rate settles back down.

Did the Mavic actually hold its own in the gusts, or was it struggling as much as the Mini? yeah!!!!

The Great "Post-Mara" Collapse
So, I returned from the Mara with grand plans of being a functional, organized human being. Naturally, the universe had a good laugh at that.

While I was busy trying to sort through photos from a few weeks ago, my internal organs decided to stage a violent, uncoordinated protest. It wasn't a "quietly-suffer-into-a-tea-cup" kind of situation; it was more of a "full-blown theatrical production that required a professional medical crew to shut down" kind of ordeal.

The Current Status:

The team at Monklands University Hospital: Absolute legends.

My Dignity: Recovering slowly.

The Plan: I’m officially back on my feet and ready to spend the next few months aggressively messing around with cameras, drones, and attempting to pilot hot air balloons around Scotland.

I’ve got until June before I head back to Governor's Balloon Safaris, and I’d really like to spend that time being productive instead of just staring at my ceiling. So, I will be looking for equestrian shoots, studio work and whatever else might come along.
