We are very sad to say that for operational reasons the Roll-Royce Spitfire will not be appearing at the Midlands Air Festival this year. However, we have been able to secure an amazing replacement in the shape of the Ray Hanna MH434 Spitfire of the Old Flying Machine Company.
Well known as the most famous Spitfire still flying, 434 had a highly succesful career in RAF service during WW2 and post war in the film industry. Ray fell in love with the aircraft on his first flight in her in 1970 and subsequently he bought her in 1983. Ray of course, was known for being in the very first RAF Red Arrows team later taking the coveted Red 1 seat for 4 years.
Both of them were true Flying Legends and were a famous display team in their own right in the UK and internationally. 434 is powered by a 1710hp Merlin engine giving 450mph with a service ceiling of 40,000ft! Big thanks to Sarah Hanna for stepping into the breach at such short notice. It will be quite a poignant sight to have the Red Arrows display, the team on site on Sunday for meet the pilots, 3 red 10’s and Ray Hanna’s Spitfire.
The Midlands Air Festival is almost upon us and it really is ticket time! Saturday is nearly sold out and Sunday is not far behind so your chances are diminishing rapidly to get your preferred days. Don’t forget children under 13 are still free. Tickets and information at www.midlandsairfestival.com
