Recently, we had the opportunity to visit the beautiful and historic Ladyewell Shrine and St Mary’s Church in Fernyhalgh, Lancashire 🌿✨. Known as the "Walsingham of the North," this sacred site is steeped in over a thousand years of prayer and devotion.
We explored the ancient Holy Well, which has been a place of baptism since at least the 7th century.
It was fascinating to learn about the merchant who, in 1471, was guided by a "miraculous voice" to build a chapel here after surviving a storm at sea.
One of the most moving highlights was seeing the Burgess Altar—a secret "sideboard" altar used by martyrs like St Edmund Campion to celebrate Mass in secret during times of persecution.
The shrine also houses incredible relics, including part of the skull of St Thomas à Becket.
If you are looking for a place of "sacred stillness" and deep spiritual history, this is a must-visit 🙏⛪.
