Arcanum Photography

Arcanum Photography Hi, I’m Bill Bishop, a commercial photographer based in Birmingham, West Midlands.

I produce images for design agencies, and also work directly for businesses and brands. I usually shoot on location and have worked throughout the UK and Europe, but I'm equally at home in a studio. I'm also a graphic designer with 20+ years' experience, so I've always had a thorough understanding of visuals and the design process. My designer's eye helps when shooting, enabling me to visualise ho

w the final image will be used. Clients benefit from my creative input to ensure the right look and feel is achieved. If you’re looking to hire an experienced professional freelance photographer for commercial, advertising, architectural, editorial or PR photography, please get in touch so that we can discuss your needs and my availability.

When I'm out networking, and I tell people I'm a photographer, the first reaction I get is, "I hate having my photo taken!"

I get it, it's a normal feeling. 90% of the people I photograph say the same. In fact, apart from professional models, it's only a small percentage of people who are naturally confident in front of my lens, and those are usually Gen Z youngsters who have grown up on Instagram.

So how do I get images like this then...?

Well, it starts with a cuppa and a chat. We'll scout out the right location. I'll show you mood boards on Pinterest that match your personality or brand.

I'm not scary, nor is my camera, so gradually you'll start to feel at ease.

Once we start shooting, frame by frame, the real 'you' will start to show through, until eventually you forget it's a photoshoot, and we create images like this.

Like most things in life, the more you do it, the easier it gets.

So if you're still using a ten-year-old iPhone selfie, or the images on your website date back to the Jurassic era, now's the time to conquer your fear and show your audience the real you...

Last Tuesday I had a 5.30am start at Superbowl UK Wolverhampton

Working with the talented team at Nettl of Birmingham I captured a range of images for their new website.

We photographed Ten Pin Bowling, Pool, Darts, Arcade Gaming, Soft Play and Food & Drink, delivering a library of images not just for the website, but future social posts.

Top chefs will always say, you eat with your eyes.

Which is why food photography is so important for hospitality businesses.

Yes, you can use stock images, but nothing will match real images of your chefs’ creations in your own environment.

Earlier this week, I photographed a beautiful independent café in Henley-in-Arden.

They serve delicious breakfasts and lunches, but also open late and offer small plates in the evening.

So I photographed the food in two contrasting styles: fresh, bright, and vibrant using natural light for the breakfasts and brunches, and cosy, moody, and warm lighting for the evening dishes.

And no, I didn't eat it all!

Most businesses don't have a professional photographer with them every day.

Usually it's a mobile phone that captures the moments that end up on social media, websites and marketing materials.

If you want better photos from your phone, here are five simple tips that make a huge difference.

Clean your lens
It sounds obvious, but pocket lint, fingerprints and dust can make photos look soft and hazy. A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth can instantly improve image quality.

Use natural light (see image below)
Whenever possible, position your subject near a window or photograph outdoors on an overcast day. See the image attached to show the difference soft overcast light makes, compared to harsh direct sunlight. (Yes I know it's AI - but it illustrates the point!) Good light will always have a bigger impact than the latest phone camera.

Get closer
Instead of using digital zoom, physically move closer to your subject. You'll get sharper images and better quality. Your legs are the cheapest zoom lens!

Simplify the background
Before taking the photo, look at what's behind your subject. Removing distractions helps draw attention to the person, product or service you're trying to showcase.

Tap to focus
Most people simply point and shoot. Tapping on your subject before taking the picture tells the camera exactly what should be sharp and properly exposed.

Photography isn't about having the most expensive camera. It's about understanding light, composition and attention to detail.

Even small improvements can make your business look more professional online.

What's the best photo you've ever taken on your phone?

Yesterday I renewed my CAA credentials (Operator ID) for the fourth successive year.

Meaning it's been four years since I have offered aerial photography to my clients.

In that time I've photographed residential and commercial property, agricultural, construction and commercial vehicles, and live events.

Sometimes it's been high up in the sky for that dramatic bird’s eye view, but more often than not, it'd been just above my subject.

For instance, in this photo I was flying just level with the roofline, allowing me to capture a perspective I could not achieve from the ground.

So if you need a higher viewpoint for your images, you had better get in touch...

Whilst most of my work is commercial photography, I was recently asked to photograph a 70th Birthday Party.

It was at Berrow Court in Edgbaston, the former home of Joseph Chamberlain and the filming location for the ITV show 'Boon' (ask your parents...)

It's now a vibrant wedding / hospitality venue, hidden away in Edgbaston.

Happy Birthday to Carla!

I recently photographed The Riverside Shopping Centre in Stafford.

It was nice to be out shooting in good light for a change.

A lot of my photography is outdoors (agriculture, construction, and commercial property), and the biggest factor in getting a great image is the quality of the light.

It's not the camera, lens, Photoshop, or even my skill that makes the difference – it's that orange ball in the sky, and the light it makes.

That's why I have three different weather apps on my phone, and I'm always waiting for that perfect moment to catch the light.

If you get any good light today – enjoy it!
