RISING TIDE

I love watching the sea as the tide comes with a certain excitement, the water going up and up, slowly covering the shore.

Maybe because it reminds me of the times I was on the beach as a child, building castles, always too close from the waterline, no matter how far it was, as the sea would always reach. The rush in creating a moat to delay the inevitable and the pleasure watching my castle walls collapse slowly and disappear as the waves receded.

Or maybe because of the regular motion of the waves, their forth and back motion, pushed higher and higher by the tide an somehow hypnotic and relaxing.

SUMMER IN THE WOODS

Glen Dee is west of Braemar, accessed via a narrow, scenic road travelling deep towards the Lin of Dee waterfall and wonderful pine woods and tracks. A wonderful day out for the family.

I wanted to capture the atmosphere of the woods as you walk along; the sun piecing through the canopy, blindingly at times; the vertical lines of the tall trees; the welcoming shade; the hint of dampness; and the wonderful, directional light, highlighting the side of the trunks and lightening the greens of the ground and the canopy; the restoring, vibrant energy of a wood walk.

THE ROAD AHEAD

This is one of my early Fine Art photographs which I took at the beginning of my new fine art path. I was playing with the Intentional Camera Movement technique I had just discovered, combined with other traditional in-camera techniques.

It had been snowing and the landscape was rather white, in fact, too white for my new technique as the delicate features of the landscape emerging from the white coat were unpleasantly distorted and muted. The road, however, provided a tunnel of colours in this otherwise blank canvas.

Milton of Drimmie is my back road. I often go there to go anywhere North. I love the tunnel of trees which bring welcoming shade of hot summer days and shelter during winter snowy days. There is something comforting when I look at it, almost hugging my soul. With the grass colour and that of trees which have retained some of the autumn hues, this image is energetic and vibrant... music to my heart and soul.

A BEAUTIFUL DAY AHEAD

Mist has always fascinated me. This natural ever changing veil that shrouds the landscape, minimising details, but with an incredible ability to carry colours and light in a truly magical way.

Mist quietens the landscape, bringing it to a halt. Sounds are louder and freshness increased, with an obvious taste of dampness on the skin and in the chest.

This image inspired by Glen Clova reminds me of the early morning walks on a visit at my (paternal) aunt when I was 8 years old. She lived in a big, old house; austere; no heating; a pungent smell of dampness; but it had a huge park, like mansions do, where each morning the mist would rise, announcing yet another great day ahead as the blue sky slowly appeared, clearer and bluer through the lifting mist.

AS LIGHT APPROACHES REVISITED

This Fine Art image has been inspired from the many abstract painters I have had the privilege to meet in 2018, while attending Open Days in Perthshire and Angus. As I talked to them, I discovered their unique visions of the world around them and the way they recreated it with acrylic paints and mixed media. I was most fascinated by their use of strong colours and it was only a matter of time when I would try and experiment with this myself with my photography style.

Post-processing suddenly became an intensive job focusing on increasing contrast and saturation to lift up the natural colour palette from the photograph, which then were shifted towards a neighbouring hue that looked less natural and more the kind of colours used by painters.

In the first editing, I had muted the sun down, removing its reflection too, to make the image moody. Today, I decided to keep it. I guess that the mood of a photograph or a painting tends to reflect the mood of the creator at the time of the making and so I would conclude that I am less moody and more cheerful today than I was 4 years ago (wink!)

SWAYING GRASS OVER A HEATHER BED

I love windy days, especially sunny ones. The strong gusts of wind that throw the vegetation and my hair in all directions. I like closing my eyes and imagine someone is giving me a head massage and I feel the relaxation growing inside me until I finally open my eyes, ready to investigate my surroundings.

One of my favourite locations in Glenisla is around Druim Dearg, for the lovely vista you get from that high up position. I park on the side of the road and walk around in search for inspiration. The ground is covered in heather and grass inevitably sprouts though the heather lumps, tall and proud, roots sheltered, soil always damp. Happy life!

There are two movements in this image. The vertical one I adopted with the camera to contrast with the horizontal one of the grass as it is violently pushed to the left, giving these wonderful curves with rusty heads.

RAIN IS COMING

I really love this image, the softness of the lines, the relaxing tones, the colours that are so evocative of the North West Scottish islands... but it is not there. This is a view of Tay Forth.

The in-camera techniques I use merge details together, simplifying the scene, and distorting the colours slightly, completely transforming the feel of the location.

SPIRIT OF FREEDOM REVISITED

"I am the Spirit Of Freedom. Speed and confidence are of the essence. I cannot be stopped while I ride the slipstream, high above the calm, blue and infinite sea.

The coast below me reaches for the sun, its silver reflections dancing happily near the shores, like millions of glittering stars shining bright and beautiful in an everlasting slow rhythm, sustained by gentle waves.

Beyond, the sea reflects the Summer sky, mirroring its details in harmonic unison and soon I will see myself."

I was asked by charity Perthshire Women’s Aid to produce a couple of images in my own style to be used as the background for a display the MOJO Group was creating. The theme of the display was “Reflecting Women” telling the journey of strength, growth and transformation abused women undertake as they escape their difficult situation and regain the confidence to rebuild their lives. To reflect the title, the image was to be an abstract of a reflection on water.

Over a few days, I scouted the local area and took many photographs. This impressionist image, which was in display at Perth Museum from 17th October 2019 till End of January 2020, was inspired by Loch Kinnordy, the wildlife reserve near Kirriemuir in Angus. It evokes flying above the ground, out of reach and safe, gathering strength and about to reach the sea into which our own reflection can be seen.

In the original image, the sun and the sun trail were not included and added later to guide the viewer's mind to a more accurate interpretation.

After a relaxing and enjoyable weekend, which saw a mini celebration concerning my recent graduation as a Hypnotherapist, I am back to prove I am not giving up photography and fine art.

This is an image of a Eurasian Eagle Owl I took in 2007, when I did a commission for a falconry while a Commercial photographer. These owls are quite impressive, growing up to 70cm tall with a wingspan of over 170cm. Easily recognisable for their orange-red eyes, whitish eyebrows and their large, dark ear tufts, they are Europe's largest owls.

And this one was intensely observing me, which awarded me a few close-up portraits like this one. Apparently, there are a few in the wild, which are believed to have all escaped falconries.

In 2019, I was working on a commission for the Mojo group, a social and support group organised by Perth Women's Aid. They needed a couple of background abstract images to complete a display for Perth Museum on the theme of Reflecting Women. The main image was to be a reflection on water, using my unique style.

I spent a couple of days shooting various images for them. Once they chose the ones they wanted, I was left with quite a few and decided to experiment with this one. The water level was high enough to make the stoned river bed invisible and the surface reflected the blue sky and the foliage of the trees on the other side of the water.

I don't know about you but I see the sun on the top left with a cherub angel's head blowing hard on a blazing fire... or maybe I should take the weekend off (ah ah!)

A BEAUTIFUL END TO A BEAUTIFUL DAY

Continuing from my post yesterday, here is my take of a beautiful sunset on the West coast. In 2012, I spent a few days on the white sands between Mallaig and Arisaig. The weather had been gorgeous and my time there very relaxing, but it was time to leave.

With a weight on my heart, I was on my way home. Reaching Glencoe village, I noticed the sunset in the car mirror. I had to stop.

I rushed outside the car and though a recycling space, so that I could be on the edge of the loch. A couple of seconds later, as I observed the sunset, a cloud of midges I had not noticed threw themselves at me. I had just time for 3 quick images before admitting defeat. I really hate midges but I love this image, so peaceful and calming. Who would believe they had midges there (ah ah!)
