Dating profile photos are one of the sessions we get asked about most quietly. Nobody wants to admit they need help with their dating app photos, but almost everyone secretly could use it.

Been photographing Joe Gaffney's headshots for a couple of years now, and it's brilliant watching an acting career build shoot by shoot.

Joe was back in the studio recently for updated headshots, and he's since been cast as Leon in No Gentle Goodnight, a new UK crime thriller currently gearing up for production. Nice bit of serendipity given the name.

Every venue changes how I shoot a wedding, and St George's Hall is one of the ones I never get tired of.

This wedding party in emerald green, right in the middle of that neoclassical entrance hall – columns, gold leaf, the works – is one of my favourite frames from this year. It's a genuinely stunning building to photograph in, and Liverpool is lucky to have it.

Part of what I love about this job is how different every venue is. From grand civic halls like this one to tiny woodland elopements, no two wedding days look the same. I've put together a list of some of my favourite venues around Liverpool and Merseyside on the website – worth a browse if you're still choosing where to get married.

Not every job in my diary is a portrait session. Alphasonics has been a client for years now, and they're a great example of the other side of what I do.

These shoots happen on-site at their base in Knowsley, often fitted in around their manufacturing and supply schedules and sometimes at fairly short notice, the goal is always minimal disruption to their production. They design and manufacture industrial ultrasonic cleaning systems, precision equipment used across print, aerospace, healthcare and engineering to clean components most of us will never see up close. Shooting product photography for kit like this is a different job entirely to portraits: consistent lighting across stainless steel and glass, clean angles that actually show how the machine works, images that need to hold up on a spec sheet as well as a homepage.

One of the genuine perks of living round here: Knowsley Safari Park and Chester Zoo are both close enough that a wildlife day out is always an easy option. I've been going to both for years and never once gone without a camera.

What's changed is who's coming with me. Our own children are grown now, but the adventures haven't stopped, they've just been handed down. These days it's our two grandsons in the back seat, and I'm just as happy photographing a tiger on the prowl or a meerkat having a look round as I was the first time I did it.

Paige and Cam booked a studio session a few weeks ago and told us exactly what they were after: an awkward couples portrait shoot. Not something we'd tried before, but we were up for it.

What followed was an hour of testing poses that shouldn't work but somehow do, the kind of over-the-top, forced-intimacy portrait that gets funnier every time you see it. These are a few of the shots Paige and Cam chose from the full set, and there were plenty more nearly as good.

One of our favourite parts of any wedding day is finding a quiet five minutes for the bride and groom, just the two of them, away from everyone else.

It gives them a proper chance to breathe and take it all in before the celebrations start back up. Some of the calmest, most genuine photos of the whole day come from moments like this.

Summer is a singer and actress from Liverpool, and she came into the studio recently to update her headshots. Her brief was straightforward but not easy: she needed images that would work equally well for acting auditions and for promoting her music, without booking two separate shoots.

We moved through a few different backdrops and looks in the same session to give her that range. Really pleased with how these turned out.
