Don't always put the light behind you—sometimes putting it behind your subject can create a much more dramatic photograph.

Backlighting happens when your main light source is positioned behind your subject, creating beautiful highlights, silhouettes, glowing edges and a real sense of atmosphere. It can be especially effective when photographing people, flowers, trees or other subjects with interesting shapes and textures.

In this example, the light coming from behind the bird helps separate them from the background and creates a soft, atmospheric glow around the edges.

✨ This week's challenge: next time you're out shooting, try positioning your subject between you and the sun. Experiment with different angles and exposure settings to see how the light changes the mood of your image.

Don't be afraid to shoot towards the light—you might just capture something special. ☀️📸

Want to make your landscape photos feel more immersive? Try adding something interesting to the foreground.

Including a foreground element gives your image another layer, creating a greater sense of depth and making the viewer feel like they’re actually standing within the scene rather than simply looking at it.

In this image, the wildflowers in the foreground lead your eye into the landscape, with the fields and mountains gradually stretching into the distance. The result feels much more three-dimensional than a photo of the mountains alone.

✨ This week's challenge: next time you're shooting a landscape, don't just look at what's in the distance. Look down and see what you can include in the foreground—flowers, rocks, grass, pathways or even a person can all help add depth.

Get low, move around and experiment with different foreground elements to see how they change your composition.
