Well it seems great fun was had by many of us yesterday evening capturing the solar event. Whether at home or abroad, local or further a-field, with family or club members many of us had a go. There were some very cool dudes with their safety glasses. What trend setters!

I think a number of us are getting ready for the solar eclipse tomorrow evening. As it is a time critical event it is essential to practice ahead of time. It is much more challenging than you might imagine.

Some of you may only be planning to observe but do ensure you have certified safety glasses that comply with safety standards (ISO 12312-2 ). Alternatively you could try rigging a piece of white paper and a colander used like a pin hole then reflect the sun onto the paper.

If you are planning to take photos you will need a special solar filter to avoid burning out your sensor.

This was the sun at lunch time today. Note the sunspot at 9 o'clock on this image. It's a good indicator as to whether the image is sharp enough.

Good luck all. Have fun and stay safe.

On Saturday 4th July BCC members joined in the kick off of Crowthorne Carnival 2026 - a week of events this year celebrating 'Planet Earth'. BCC had a stall at the Carnival Fete and additionally we had a gallery of images at the Morgan Centre which was a great place to grab a cup of tea and enjoy the relief of an air conditioned room out of the heat of the day. Some members were out and about photographing members of the community including the four-legged type and the fabulously colourful parade. Here is just a selection of some of our images.
