**Antarctic Fur Seal Pup**

Its silver-grey coat marks this youngster as around 8–12 weeks old and provides effective camouflage among the lichen-covered rocks, while its mother is feeding at sea.

This pup will remain dependent on its mother until around four months of age, when she initiates weaning by simply not returning from a feeding trip.

The Turkey Vulture.

Designed for its niche, not its looks.

This scavenger's bare head and powerful bill are suited to feeding on carrion, while its broad wings and dark plumage help it soar over vast distances and absorb warmth during cool mornings.

Found from southern Canada to the sub-Antarctic regions of South America, it is one of the most widespread scavenging birds in the Americas.

First light in the woodland.

Before the day's first hunt, this buzzard sits silently amongst the branches, watching and waiting.

Not every hunt begins on the wing.

A shared habitat.

Found along the coasts of South America and the sub-Antarctic islands, Dolphin Gulls share their habitat with other seabirds, including Gentoo Penguins.

Their pale grey plumage, bright red bill and vivid red legs make them one of the most distinctive gulls of the southern oceans. These colourful features are thought to play a role in courtship and social displays.

With breeding season approaching, nuthatches become increasingly focused on territory, food availability, and suitable nesting cavities.

Once established, breeding pairs may raise several chicks, with both parents feeding and defending the young after hatching.

Heavy lift-off.

Great cormorants are powerful diving birds, but weighing on average around 3kg, becoming airborne is rarely graceful.

Their heavy bodies and wet plumage often require a prolonged, energy-demanding take-off across the water’s surface.

**Seasonal Bond**

Razorbills re-establish pair bonds when they return to the same narrow cliff ledges each year.

Males use a series of courtship displays — holding the bill upright, gaping to reveal their bright yellow mouth, bill-clicking, and brief wing flashes — to attract a mate or reinforce an existing bond.

Red deer can pick up disturbance through scent alone. In this instance, the stag’s response wasn’t flight — it stopped, searched, and located my position.

I stayed with it as it rejoined the herd.

I’ve shared more from this encounter on my website — I’ll leave the link in the comments.

Follow along for more wildlife encounters.
