Two clients, two completely different shoots, because they're two completely different people. Before you contact a photographer, get clear on what you're actually trying to say in your photos, beyond the word "professional." What's your industry? What's the feeling?

One example, is a Relational Bodywork coach who wanted her next shoot to feel more grounded, so we shot outside surrounded by nature. Another is a design and technology teacher, so we shot at the ScienceMuseum. Same starting question, two completely different answers.

What's the vibe you'd want to get across in yours?

A friend messaged me recently asking how to help someone find a photographer to finally book their headshots. She lives 4,000 miles away, so instead of flying out I sent her a string of voice notes. Turns out I have a lot of opinions on this. Over the next few days I'm sharing what I told her, because most people go into a headshot shoot with zero prep and wonder why the photos feel off.

I could have shot - ELOISE SKINNER - in this suit by Ahluwalia all day.

The setup for this room was simple. A window for the base light and a softbox to shape it, a chair angled just off both, and - ELOISE SKINNER -, who brought the rest. Editorial style work doesn't always need a big setup. It needs the right light and someone willing to give you something real.

You don't have to be a professional model to look this good in photos.
is a Design Technology teacher who came to me for updated headshots after moving back to the UK from South Korea. The moment she told me about her work, the Science Museum was an obvious choice; somewhere that actually meant something to her, not just a clean wall.
That's what headshots should be, not a generic backdrop and a polite smile. Images that represent who you actually are.
