Dunnet Head, Caithness, Northern Scotland:
Dunnet Head is a peninsula on the northern coast of Caithness, Scotland, around 10 miles west of John o’ Groats. Its northern tip, Easter Head, is the northernmost point on the island of Great Britain. The peninsula forms the western boundary of the Pentland Firth, with Duncansby Head marking the eastern side. There are fabulous views across the Pentland Firth to the island of Hoy in Orkney.
I have often wondered why the Land’s End to John o’ Groats journey attracts so much more attention than the true mainland extremities of Britain — Lizard Point in Cornwall and Dunnet Head in Caithness. A more complete challenge might be to combine all four: start at Land’s End, continue to nearby Lizard Point, travel north to Dunnet Head, and finish at John o’ Groats!!
John o’ Groats itself has always felt something of an anticlimax to me especially compared to Dunnet Head, although the cliffs at nearby Duncansby Head, with their two enormous sea stacks, are genuinely spectacular.
