Happy International Women's Day! 💪❤️

What wonderful woman would you like to celebrate today?

Let us know below and share their stories ❤️

I first read about Irena Sendler a few years ago, and her story has always stuck with me.
Her quiet heroism, absolute selflessness and amazing amounts of courage are inspiring.

In short, this incredible lady rescued over 2,500 Jewish children and babies, smuggling them out of N**i controlled ghettos and away from almost certain death.

She knew that if she was caught she would be mercilessly killed.
But she did it anyway.

She was captured, imprisoned and brutally tortured by the Gestapo.
But she never revealed a single detail that would endanger the families or children she had helped.

She was sentenced to ex*****on.
But she and her colleagues managed to bribe the guards, allowing her to narrowly escape death.

And after all that, whilst on the run, Irena returned to the underground resistance group Zegota under a differnt name, so that she could continue her work.

She kept meticulous records of each child and baby that she rescued, and hid the lists in jars, burying them in locations that only she knew, so that she could reunite the children with their families once the war was over.
Sadly, once the time came, she learned that almost all of the families had been killed at the Treblinka concentration camp or were missing.

Almost no one knew of Sendler and her heroism.

She would have remained an unsung hero, but for three teenage girls from Kansas who discovered her forgotten story decades later.

Liz, Megan, and Sabrina, started researching Irena's story after coming across a small news clipping as part of their research for a National History Day competition. Those scant details inspired them so, that they dived into researching and documenting her full story, and even created a play "Life in a Jar", finally bringing the courageous heroine's achievements to light.

Irena passed away in 2008, at the age of 98, but I know her story shall stick with me, and future generations, for a life time. ❤️
