Why your celebrant is just as important as your photographer (IMO)

When it came to our own wedding budget we prioritised four things that had to be no less than EXCELLENT: food, drink, photography and celebrant (video was sorted, we’d do it ourselves!)

We took care of the first two by having our weddings in Brighton and Lisbon (food and booze havens). Photography was sorted (thank you Kitty & Ami!) And there was no hesitation that we were gonna fly India out to Lisbon with us for what we saw as the most important part of all our celebrations: the celebrant-led ceremony.

We were never gonna spend money on clothes, shoes, hair and make up, accessories, single-use items. It’s not us. We chose to invest in people.

And it really was only ever going to be India Bel Rose 💗 London Wedding Celebrant 💗 . I’d been lucky enough to work with her multiple times already but it wasn’t until Ruby and Ryan’s wedding in 2024 that Tristan got to see her in action for the first time. We proposed to her there and then!

A good celebrant will do a nice job. I’ve seen many. They’ll say some funny things about you, keep the atmosphere relaxed and duck out when it’s over.

A great celebrant (like a great photographer) will go above and beyond. Create something so bespoke it’s like they’ve reached into your souls and pulled out parts of you that you didn’t know existed. Hold the space so it’s safe for everyone to cry (literally in our case). Take your beginnings of ideas and curate them into full fledged moments. Be the part of the wedding that no one can stop talking about.

We’ll never quite know how to thank India for doing that for us. I just hope we keep getting booked on more jobs together so I can gush about her with ya’ll too 🩷🧡

We got married in the hotel we got engaged in, so she suggested we read the letters we’d written to each other then on the same room, and add new bits as our wedding vows. We got (most) of our sobbing out before the ceremony this way, so that when it came to saying them again in front of our families we felt more grounded.

The aftermath 😂

Spontaneously starting the ceremony with high fives - can’t do this

I, quite frankly, live for documenting weddings like this.

Becuase when there is absolutely zero performativity in your wedding day, all that’s left is human stories.

Proper connections. Messiness. Silly. Raw. HUMAN.

I crave it in my work, so to be given a twelve (and a half) hour day that is is free of rigid scheduling and shot lists is *the dream*

Mai (they/them) and Sam (he/him) found me on the LGBTQ+ Inclusive Wedding Suppliers, Wedding Fairs & Education back in January when my original 5th of Sep Welsh clients had just had to move their date to later in the year, so by a little universal alignment, I was free for their 5th Sep Cardiff wedding!

A ceremony of 40 guests at Insole Court. Lunch at Porro. A break in the day for naps and introverting. A galavant on the beach. 100+ more pals and family joining at Sully Sports & Social.

Food, booze, music, sunshine.

I am BUZZED to get their Super 8 off to the lab. Thank you Mai & Sam for being my favorite kind of humans. And thank you to all their guests who genuinely made me feel like I was part of the family.

I’m back!

And I have been desperate to share this beautiful wedding with you.

Not only becuase Leah (she/her) and Heather (she/her) are the most beautiful couple in the world who DIY-d every single bit of their stunning Harty Estate wedding - down to creating a seating plan that contained each guest handmade out of felt!

But also because they need support and I wanted to call on my wonderful community to do so.

You’ll see on the last slide a qr code to their prezola page where there’s a link to gift them a contribution towards their IVF fund:

“As many of you know, IVF is expensive, and not weight inclusive in the UK. We are planning to do IVF in Cyprus, which is more affordable and inclusive for us. The IVF we are dreaming of is not cheap so every single penny will help us get one step closer to our dream, baby O’Neill”

Thanks to my sliding scale pricing and the incredibly generous clients of mine who have opted to pay the Supporter tier I’ve been able to make a contribution. So this is a thank you to them (they know who they are!) and an invitation to anyone who enjoys my work to give anything you can to help Leah and Heather on their journey to becoming parents. It only took a short time in their presence to see how phenomenal they will be at it 🩷🖤

I’ll still be here - capturing your love stories and chatting with those of you who are just getting started on your wedding adventure - but my phone will be shoved in a drawer and not opened again until Sep 1st.

I hope to see you all then 🧡

TW: Homophobia from a wedding photographer

I’ve been saying it for eleven years (in this industry) and I’ll keep on saying it:

It doesn’t matter if you are *not homophobic, not transphobic, not racist, not fat-phobic, not ableist* - if you do not SHOW your potential clients this with your words, photos, actions etc how are they supposed to know?

Why would they feel safe with you?

What do you need to change?

There is nothing like starting your wedding day with a collective swim. Whether it’s Brighton beach, a campsite pond, or - in this case - Westport Quay, County Mayo, Ireland.

Not only does it ground you ahead of what can be an overwhelmingly day, it connects you with those who join (always more than you think!) realigns your whole self with the universe and, most importantly, sets the tone for the rest of the day. This is going to be a space for laughter, silliness, unbridled joy. We don’t need to be overly polite, nervous to clap, follow too many rules. We are here to exist as ourselves.

Anna (she/her) and Dáire (he/him) are two people you want to grab a pint of Guinness with. They ooze warmth.

Keen observers of the grid will remember them from their legal bit in Brighton back in Jan. Having spent time with them and their immediate family then made this day even more special, and when I sensed the practically of talking to a hundred people all at once was getting a little overwhelming, I snuck them back to the Quay (Guinness in hand) to get whipped in the face with the wind and mist for a few minutes.

The next morning (after I’d sent them their sneak peeks) I took my book to The Point, had a paddle in the Atlantic myself and wrote about the huge gratitude I felt for this life. Clients like A&D are quite literally the dream.

And yes, Dáire’s suit is EVERYTHING 💚🤍🧡

BRIGHTON ELOPEMENT but make it Hong Kong 35mm vibezzzz 🎞️

So excited to finally be able to share these with you! Rosemary (she/her) and Louisa (she/her) got hitched at Brighton Town Hall back in April and gave me the brief of Hong Kong style 35mm film photography for their portraits around Brighton. We had the best time galavanting round their favourite spots - fries and milkshakes at Five Guys, the claw machine at the arcade, tinnies from the corner shop and meeting their gorgeous pup on the beach for a scene stealing photo (slide 12)

These photos were printed and displayed at the big June party which means I’ve been given the all clear to allow you to feast your eyes on them!

Absolutely obsessed.

Whaddya reckon?

What if your bezzies were coming down from Edinburgh to stay with you in Brighton and you decided to get hitched that weekend?

What if you hired a photographer to hang out with you from your 10.30am Brighton Town Hall Civil Ceremony all the way through to your 5pm tattoos at Magic Tattoo?

Would it feel like 7 solid hours of posing for the camera?

Or would it look and feel like a document of your adopted home town and your best day out in it?

I loved every second of this gorgeous Brighton elopement. James (he/him) John (he/him) and their pals Matt & Itzi immediately made me feel like one of the gang. Whilst taking the ‘band pic’ on slide 8 a kid walked past and said ‘you look like a doo-wop band!’ which naturally became the theme for the silliness of the day. The band took on the name ‘Seagulls and Butterflies’ and even wrote their first banger ‘Hot Diggity Dog’ by the end of the day 😂

We had the most gorgeous, chilled, easy-going day of hitting Brighton’s highlights:

A morning civil ceremony at Brighton Town Hall
Photos in The Lanes
A stroll through the Pavilion Gardens
Ice Cream and rides on Brighton Palace Pier (discovering the dodgems are James’s happy place)
Penny games in the Amusement Arcade under the pier
Fish & Chips on Kings Road
Photoboothing in Snoopers Paradise
Bubble guns in front of Duke’s at Komedia
Negroni’s at Bar Valentino
Adding another matching star at Magic Tattoo (a slight improvement to the one 16 years prior)

If this kind of wedding sounds like your kinda wedding - DO IT! You won’t regret it. Camcorder vid coming soon too 🧡
