Just going through some of my weddings from the last few years and “rediscovered” this image that I’d completely forgotten about.
Which is strange really, because in many ways this photo sums up exactly how I see weddings.
Yes, I’m there to capture real moments and the story of the day as it naturally unfolds. But what really excites me is finding the photos within the moments. The layers, the reflections, the little bits of visual storytelling that most people would walk straight past.
This wasn’t set up. Nothing was directed. It just slowly started to come together. I noticed the reflections, the spacing, the possibility of getting three different faces in three different mirrors, and waited a few seconds for it to fall into place.
Is it perfect? No. I’d have loved a bit more connection between them, maybe slightly different expressions…but wedding photography isn’t about perfection, it’s about awareness. About seeing potential before it disappears again a few seconds later.
This is the bit people don’t always see when they’re choosing a photographer. It’s not just about being present when things happen. It’s about how you see. Experience teaches you to look differently. To anticipate. To compose. To turn ordinary moments into something a bit more thoughtful and a bit more artistic.
Anyone can photograph what’s happening.
Not everyone is looking for what could be happening at the same time.
