Eight weddings. Eight completely different days. One person behind the camera. One wedding photographer.

Different venues, different countries, different weather.

And you can still tell they are all mine.

That is the whole thing, really. Not that every wedding looks the same, because they absolutely do not. But that whoever you are, and whatever your day turns out to be, it will come back looking like it was seen by the same pair of eyes.

That consistency is basically what you are buying. Not a style you get talked into. Just someone who sees the same way in a dark church in January as in a field in July.

LET ME WARN YOU… in December, you lose the light at 4pm! 🕓

So if you are planning a winter wedding, it can't run the same way as a summer one. You basically need to build the whole day backwards from sunset.

Here is a sample classic winter wedding timeline.

09:00 Hair and makeup starts
12:00 Put the wedding dress on
13:00 Ceremony
13:30 Drinks reception and canapés
14:30 Family photos
15:20 Golden hour couple portraits
16:00 Guests seated
16:15 Speeches
16:45 Dinner
18:30 Cake cutting
18:45 Sparklers
19:00 First dance

Look at where the couple portraits sit. 3:20pm! In June that would be a 9pm start.

Three rules I always keep in mind.

PROTECT THE LIGHT: The ceremony needs to start early, such as 1pm, not 2:30pm. If you want family portraits in natural light, we need to aim for the best time to capture it.

FEED THE PEOPLE: Your reception runs from around 1:30 to 4pm. Always make sure to organise canapés, possibly at the same time as the drinks reception.

BUILD IN MORE BUFFER TIME THAN YOU THINK: Wearing coats, colder weather, everything will be a bit slower than usual.

And honestly, the evening is the loveliest part of a winter wedding. By the time dinner comes out it is properly dark, and it is all candles and a dancefloor. That is usually when my favourite photographs happen!

A year ago Emma and Steve got married, and it rained. They came away from the day without many photographs of just the two of them together, which is the part that is hard to get back.

So they booked me for their first anniversary, put the same dress on again, and we spent an evening at Thornbury Castle.

It rained on us too. We waited it out under an umbrella, and then about an hour before the light went it stopped, and the castle wall turned completely orange.

I think anniversary sessions are one of the loveliest things a couple can book. There is no timeline and nobody waiting for you. If your own day did not give you the photographs you hoped for, it is genuinely not too late.

Your family photo list is going to ruin your drinks reception. Just saying…🤔

I say this as gently as I can, because nobody else is going to say it to you at all.

The list is usually created about a week before the wedding. Somebody has thought very hard about it, and it is long, because families are complicated and everyone deserves to be in one.

Every combination on that list takes about two minutes. That’s if all the right people are standing in the right place at the right time. They’re not. Uncle Jon is at the bar. Your grandmother has gone to sit down and quite reasonably doesn’t want to get up again.

So the thirty minutes you planned becomes an hour, and that hour comes straight out of the only part of the day where you actually get to talk to the people who travelled to be there.

My cap is 8 to 10 groups, and we’re finished in 20 to 30 minutes. Parents. Grandparents. Siblings. One big one for each side. Everything else I find through the day without asking anyone to stand anywhere, and those are usually the ones you end up printing.

The other thing that fixes it: pick a wrangler. One loud person per family who knows the names and isn’t shy about shouting them. They call, I photograph, nobody wanders off.

Nobody looks back at their wedding and thinks about the list. They think about whether they got a drink.

What to do if it’s raining on your wedding day? Everyone panics about rain, but honestly? We grabbed a clear umbrella and these turned into some of my favourite photos of the day. Every so often a wedding takes me back home. Pati and Gábor got married in the Hungarian countryside, and nobody there was performing. The priest wrapped their hands in an embroidered stole, there was money on the floor from the dance, and rice at the church door. This is how I photograph every wedding. Close, quiet, and real. I hear this from almost every couple and it's exactly what I love to prove wrong. Tom and his fiancée came to their engagement shoot feeling unsure, and by the end we'd had the loveliest evening. Here's what Tom wrote:

"Documentary photos won't be as artistic or flattering as posed ones." 🤍

I hear this a lot, and I get it. Somewhere along the way, "documentary" came to mean blurry, badly lit snaps. But that's not what it means, at least not for me. Documentary is how I catch the real moment; art is how I choose to catch it: the light, the framing, the drama, the mood (my partner George shapes the light with me, so the real moments also look cinematic and editorial).

You don't have to choose between real and beautiful. With me, you get both.
