A little bit about me, and how Clare Shapcott Photography came to be.
I’ve been photographing people for over 10 years now, but it actually started when my son was born. I became slightly obsessed with photographing all the tiny details I didn’t want to forget, his hands, eyelashes, expressions, all the little things that change so quickly.
I’d always been an artist, so photography very quickly became another way for me to create. I wanted to understand light, colour, composition and how to make the images I could picture in my head.
Since then I’ve photographed newborns, children, families, maternity, weddings, performers, professionals and all sorts of creative portraits. I’ve trained, gained professional qualifications and continued learning throughout, but the art side of photography has always stayed at the heart of what I do.
I love beautiful light, rich colours, texture and images that feel a little painterly, but I also want the people I photograph to still look and feel like themselves. I don’t think portraiture should be about putting everyone through exactly the same formula.
More than anything, I want to make photographs that feel special now and become even more valuable as the years go by.
So that’s me, an artist who somehow ended up with a camera, and never really put it down.
