Happy St.George's day people!(Pic near Abbot's pool Bristol from last year's St.George's day when I could still run Landscape Photography courses - apparently it's the traditional day for making dandelion wine -I wonder why?).

Winner of last week's massive prize in my LOCKDOWN PHOTO COMPETITION edition was Elspeth with her magnificent Cowslips shot. After "smiles" "hands" and "Flowers" I'm still trying to think up themes that don't tempt you out too much.

So, this week's theme is one close to the heart of every you-tuber / instagrammer - a great shot of some FOOD.

I enclose an example made by one of the judges (daughter 1) this week for a birthday party (held at 3m separation distance on Sunday). Of course, with restaurants closed this means being more creative than usual.

The prize is going to be a distance learning 2 hour photo tutorial with me whenever and about whatever aspect of snapping you'd like - worth £75.

Please post your shots over on this page for judging.

Rules: New shots please. Deadline Midnight Sunday 26th April.

Stay safe, get snappin, don't overeat.

Real Prize!

As we enter the fourth week of my fabulous, famous and freaky Lockdown Photo Competition, I have a few announcements:

1.Last week's winners (yes plural) were Sofi Rose and Tim Wye who each get half of the bar of soap (to be delivered after lockdown). Congratulations for excellent images. Bet you can hardly wait to get those hands properly clean.

2.Instead of silly prizes (I've run out of ideas), this week I'm offering a proper prize: a Photo School Bristol two hour tutorial voucher worth £75 !! - it's transferrable so if you win, feel you know enough already and want to pass it on as a gift, that's fine.

The tutorial can be fully remote, via zoom, skype or facetime, or one-to-one after lockdown where the lucky winner can come to my studio and play with high end photo gear or simply learn how to boss their own camera. The tutorial can focus (ha!) on anything from beginner to very advanced - I teach professionals how to do this stuff. A recent gig was Amazon UK's graphic design department- teaching them product photography in their studio which I'd helped to set up.

3. This week's theme is FLOWERS - please be sensible about where you snap them - (ie. doesn't have to be outdoors on a Johnson….)

4. Rules - no old shots please, fresh stuff only. Post on here but also on my Photo School Bristol fB page ( https://www.facebook.com/photoschoolbristol/ )so my daughters can judge.

5. Deadline midnight Sunday 19th April.

Get snapping and stay safe !

Slightly later than promised (I've been a tad busy having blazing arguments with my locked down children) here's this week's photo competition.

The theme is "The view from my house" (see my studio rooftop view of Cotham skyline from down here in lower murky working class Montpelier - I can dream can't I?).

And the big news: THE PRIZE.

This week it's a really fantastic one - a (well, nearly - I teach Photoshop) full packet of Fusilli Lunghi Bucati No5 - yes you heard it right, No5! Complete with Licata's certification price tag. A real collector's item. Just imagine, you, too, could soon be munching on these rare spirals of wonderfulness - all you have to do is post your pic here (or even better on my Photo School Bristol page) and my charming daughters will make their unbiased judgment.

Get snapping, snappers but always stay safe (and at home, unless you're a front-liner in which case: THANKYOU).

Winner of my "Smile during lockdown" contest and now proud possessor of the magnificent first prize is Kirsty Armstrong with her cheeky "self isolating in the camper van" NOTtaken in the Scottish Highlands or other stressed locale recently I hope... The much sought after roll will be safely stored with me here Kirsty and I'll deliver it after lockdown (unless you have an emergency). I'm working on next week's theme.....

LOCKDOWN PHOTOGRAPHY - DETAILS
(I'm making this up as I go along…)

I'm a Bristol based advertising photographer and I've been genuinely impressed by the tremendous spirit shown by people in the face of this awful crisis. Rather than get depressed by the massive economic shock that the downturn in the economy is producing for self-employed people like me and the people I employ I've decided to start a little campaign to make the best of the increasingly stringent lockdown we are all suffering and my newly acquired extra spare time.

Someone on Radio 4 today was suggesting taking the opportunity to "learn a new skill or hobby" whilst you are stuck isolated as a way of keeping your spirits up. What a great idea, which got me to thinking…

The only subject I know absolutely "inside out and back to front" is the gentle art of snapping I thought it might be a good idea to propose a little weekly competition based on photography with the aim of people improving and learning.

I'm happy to give free advice on anything photography related and host any pics on my page Photo School Bristol (I also teach photography) and I'll be offering a weekly prize for the pic judged (to start with) by my wife and two teenage daughters.

Starting Saturday 21st with the winner announced on the following Saturday.

HUGE PRIZE (see photo!) supplied by me. I'm circulating this locally (I'm in Montpelier) and to any interested Bristol groups I can think of - please feel free to forward.

I'm happy to have the rules / judges etc. develop over time - I'm NOT doing this for any other reason that just trying to lift your spirits and I'm NOT harvesting emails or selling anything. I'm just trying to offer a little cheer - You don't need a posh camera (phones are fine) or experience and I'm happy to advise on how to get good shots - just ask me on this page.

This week's theme is SMILE and I've included three which I did in an old ad campaign for SWEB (which is why the composition is a bit odd - leaves room for text in the adverts…). So please post any pics you take with this theme and get your chance to win the amazing prize and the kudos of being "Anti Covid Depression Snapper" of the week, (or some such cheesy title)…

Please, please, please comply with Gov advice about SOCIAL DISTANCING and maybe take photos inside rather than out? SMILE as a theme could include selfies, things that make us smile, inanimate objects appearing to smile and so on.

If this helps at all and seems popular I'm up for running it as long as it seems helpful.
Stay safe, all.

Being quite old-school I have most of my contact with peeps interested in learning more about snapping via my website (click on contact us button) and email but I know Facebook is also popular so I'm going to start keeping this page more up to date. Starting with a (very)small selection of the happy students from courses I have run over the past two years.
