An evening run on Askham Fell, making the most of a break in the weather.

I’ve spent much of the past few months fuelling marathon training with gels, but for steadier runs and longer days in the hills I often appreciate having something a bit more substantial. The new Active Root Energy Bar was easy to carry and felt more like real food than sports nutrition.

Thanks to .root for sending one over to try.

London Marathon 2026.

I’m always trying to figure out what works best for fuelling longer runs and races, but I’ve gradually realised I do better with things that feel simple, easy to carry, and not overly sweet.

The .root gels became part of my marathon training for exactly that reason — easy on the stomach, especially for longer efforts.
