Cherie Bridges / Small is Beautiful / This photo is part of a larger project, illuminating the complexity, biodiversity and vulnerability of marine life. Structured into three sections: A Life in Motion; A Closer Look; and The Big Picture; this venture explores marine life through several creative mediums such as time- lapse, film, microscopy and photography. Aiming at reconnecting the viewer with an otherwise undervalued ecosystem, the collective binds together creative elements in what can only be described as a reunion - bridging the great divide that lies between our own world and the one that lies beneath the ocean.

This Afternoons post is by James Etchells!

James Etchells / Ancient Landscapes / Using a range of photographic techniques, Ancient Landscapes captures the dramatic outdoors of the south west of England. It draws on the traditions of landscape photography to explore local history, from the Neolithic to the Industrial Revolution. A variety of techniques, including traditional black and white, colour and infrared, create a combination of realism and surrealism.

This evenings post is by Sophie Green!

Sophie Green / Cornwall's Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB's) / An area of outstanding natural beauty is precisely what it says it is – an outstanding landscape whose distinctive character and natural beauty are so precious that it is safeguarded in the national interest. With 46 AONBs covering just under 1/5th of the UK, they offer a wealth of opportunities for both people and wildlife to benefit from our countryside.
Within the county of Cornwall there are 12 designated AONB’s and each location possess certain traits and characteristics - geological, historical and ecological, that make them unique and separates them from anywhere else in Cornwall.

The idea behind this project was to capture and beautify the individual elements of each landscape, the very features responsible for gaining these locations their AONB status and to reflect Cornwall’s coastal magnificence as well as my own appreciation for it.

Here’s a snippet from Daphne Wong's final film, on display at Exhibition Orbis this week!

The Chinese White Dolphin (Sousa chinensis) has been living in the waters of Hong Kong for hundreds of years. The dolphin, which is in fact pink in appearance, is nicknamed ‘Panda of the Sea’, due to its rarity and friendliness. Despite being chosen as the handover mascot in 1997 when Britain returned the region to China, the Chinese White Dolphin’s fate is not auspicious at all. Their numbers have plunged 75% since 2003, and the species was recently uplisted to the ‘Vulnerable’ status in the IUCN Red List. They are facing multiple threats, including habitat loss due to coastal development, water pollution, and danger of collision with vessels.

'白海豚失樂園 Breathing Room' is a 30-minute documentary on the plight of the Chinese White Dolphin in Hong Kong. The film brings to light the research and conservation work that is being done to save them, and discusses the implications of habitat loss due to continuous coastal developments for these iconic pink dolphins.

A small teaser for Karl Davies film that will be on show at Exhibition Orbis this week!

Karl Davies / The Landscape of Consumption / The last half-century of exponential population growth, combined with consumer-capitalism, has vastly transformed the topography of our small green planet. The Landscape of Consumption depicts, through dramatic time-lapse photography, these manufactured environments and their perpetual processes of consumption. Via endless cityscapes and cathedral-like shopping malls, the film takes us on a mesmeric journey through our modern, almost dystopian, reality.

Overall, 200,000 still images were created across 3 continents in 20 days to form this 10-minute short.
